Artist Statement: The location I picked for My Hometown is the theater. I live in Portage and have for my entire life, but ever since I was little my mother has run the theater program here. I would go with my mom to almost all the rehearsals, and shows, and I was in Vicksburg almost all the time. I would be running around the school, standing backstage or doing my own dances in the choir and band room. I grew up eating Yogis in the Performing Arts Center sitting in awe of all the older kids on stage. Now that I now go to Vicksburg it is truly my hometown and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Artist Statement: When we were told we had to take a picture of something that reminds us of wintertime, I knew exactly what I wanted to take a picture of. On Long Lake in Scotts, Michigan, specifically the view from my aunt’s house, there were so many memories made. Every winter, my cousins and I all meet up at least once and ice skate on the frozen lake. The fun part is that nobody really even knows how to skate. We would be out there for hours, laughing and falling continuously, but no amount of bruises would ever take away from the fact that it was the best part of winter.

Artist Statement: I took this picture of a barn I pass every day on my way to school. I don’t usually stop and think about it, but in the fall, it always stands out to me. The colors around it change, the air feels different, and somehow the barn feels quieter and more noticeable. It’s been there through so many mornings, early car rides, tired days, good days and it’s become part of my routine. Taking this photo made me slow down and really look at something I usually just drive past. The worn wood and empty fields remind me that even ordinary places can hold meaning if you pay attention. This barn feels familiar and comforting, especially during a season that’s always changing.

Artist Statement: My dad and I were driving home from school one autumn afternoon when we passed by the Prudential Nursery Co. in Vicksburg. Behind the property, he noticed the most beautiful, bright orange trees growing near the fields. For the longest time, I have always been fascinated by the delicacy and uniqueness of nature, but especially during the fall here in Vicksburg. As soon as I start to see the leaves change colors and feel the breeze begin to chill, I can’t help but admire how intricate and detailed this village really is. So, when I saw these trees behind the nursery, I knew they were the perfect spot to shoot at. I am so grateful the owner of this nursery allowed my dad and me to get the chance to experience such a dazzling view, and I absolutely loved being able to be so close to such a rare wonder of nature.

A massive congratulations to Vicksburg High School’s own Bryce Sherwood for taking 1st Place in the 4th Annual South County News Photo Contest! 📸🚜

Bryce’s winning image—a stunning, "golden hour" shot of his family’s vintage Ford truck—is officially the cover of the February issue! His photo perfectly captured our "My Hometown" theme by honoring Vicksburg’s deep farming roots and the hard work of the generations before us. Bryce, your eye for detail and lighting is top-tier! 🌅✨

Artist Statement from Bryce- 1st Place, Bryce Sherwood: This photo is of the rusted front of a classic Ford dump truck, captured in the “golden hour” of sunset. I chose this truck because it deeply represents Vicksburg’s farming heritage and the hard work of my family. These trucks were the essential workhorses that built our community by hauling grain and materials every season. They were also the lifeline of our farm, hauling every single harvest we brought in for decades. I used the camera setting f/2.8 to make the front super sharp, with a blur in the background, focusing all the attention on the rust. The image is a tribute to endurance and dedication that defines Vicksburg and my family.

I also want to extend a huge, heartfelt Thank You to Kathy Forsythe.

Kathy, your organization and generosity toward our students and the VHS photography program are what make opportunities like this possible. We are so lucky to have you in our corner, championing these young artists and giving them a professional platform to showcase their talent.

Be sure to grab a copy of South County News this month to see Bryce’s work on the front page! 📰🙌https://southcountynews.org/2026/02/04/south-county-news-photo-contest/

Bryce Sherwood, Badger, 2025 Digital Photography.

Bryce was out west hunting a few weeks ago and captured this badger. He was busy digging for prairie dogs. He did manage to pause for a second and allow Bryce to capture this beautiful shot. Wonderful job Bryce! Yes, it was a successful trip out west as he harvested a beautiful mule deer! If you see Bryce tell him great capture with this badger picture!

The 2nd place winning photo, captured by Jordyn Clarey, shows a covered bridge in the background with a small stream running throughout. The judges appreciated her creative, artistic entry. The 3rd place photo by Corrine Wilson is especially colorful, and her artist’s statement explains her deep connection to Vicksburg High School’s “Big Red Machine,” and its importance to her sense of belonging. The judges enjoyed Ella Mann’s 4th place photo and the striking lines of the abandoned trestle. Drake Ritenauer’s 5th place photo of the Mill and his artist’s statement regarding the importance of the Mill and its history resonated with the judges.

Here are the artist statements for 2nd through 5th place finishers.
2nd Place: Jordyn Clarey

When I think of “hometown”, I visualize the beauty of nature, particularly during the fall. The vibrant colors of the leaves against the flowing stream of water capture the natural beauty I associate with fall, and the nostalgia that comes with it, reminding me of time spent with family and friends admiring the scenery. The bright oranges and yellows of the leaves remind me of the warmth of those moments. To me, this photo represents not only the beauty of nature but also the countless memories with my loved ones, serving as a reminder that, no matter how much time passes, fall will always bring me back to those moments.

3rd Place: Corrine Wilson

Through my lens, I’ve attempted to capture the essence of my hometown, Vicksburg, Michigan, by focusing on The Big Red Machine and the Roar of the Crowd. I captured a picture of a shako, otherwise known as a bucket, and a plume. One of the best things Vicksburg is known for is our phenomenal marching band. Under the direction of Mr. Ben Rosier and Mr. Jay Bennett, the BRM works incredibly hard to be the best we can be. I have been a part of the band program since 6th grade and have been playing the flute for 7 years. I knew I wanted to capture a picture that related to the BRM because of the incredible impact it has had on me and many others. I wanted to capture a picture that was very recognizable. This picture is even more sentimental because I am now a senior and have finished my final season of marching band.

4th Place: Ella Mann

Though not in Kalamazoo County, my hometown is where my home is. Just on the outskirts of Calhoun County, there is a bridge that has been out for years. Apple Maps will tell you this bridge is a viable option to take to shorten any route — I’m sure that makes sense when you see that there are holes in the road of this bridge. Regardless of what this bridge is lacking in stable architecture, it has an abundance of memories from everyone that lives around it. A majority of my childhood summers were spent fishing at this bridge with my legs dangling off the sides, catching my lure on the power line above from casting too high. Other memories were chasing the snakes that came out during the spring on the dirt roads surrounding it. This bridge will forever be remembered as a cherished site in my childhood memory.

5th Place: Drake Ritenauer

When the words “Hometown” are said, I immediately think of the still amiable town of Vicksburg. Whether it’s the small-town atmosphere or the peaceful landscape surrounding, Vicksburg is it for me. But what put my hometown Vicksburg on the map? At its peak, Vicksburg was a bustling center for paper production and railway transportation. The main focal point of Vicksburg’s growth was the Lee Paper Mill. At its peak it produced 17 tons of paper per day from its over-420,000 square foot facility. The Mill acted as a driving force for economic changes in Vicksburg and put Vicksburg on the map. That is why for this hometown image I chose to shine light on this amazing piece of history, the Mill.

Congratulations to all students that placed! Job well done!

I'm proud to present the results of the third annual South County News February Cover Contest for Vicksburg High School photography students. A big congratulations goes to Noelle Germay of Vicksburg High School for having her photograph make the cover of the South County News, February edition.

It was chosen from the theme of 'My Hometown' for the 2025 February edition. I presented the project to my three photography classes in late September, which allowed over three months for students to capture their best images to express the project theme. Sixty-two students submitted entries for consideration. The top five are recognized and presented by the South County News team this month. Included with each photo is the artist’s statement.

A very special thank you to Kathy Forsythe and the staff at South County News for giving these photography students the opportunity to have their work featured. This marked the third year that the South County News has sponsored this contest.

1st Place: Noelle Germay

Choosing Scotts Mill County Park to take a picture was not my first choice when this project was originally brought to light. I knew I wanted to choose something that was unique or different from the normal landscape, but I was shot out of ideas. I wanted to understand the theme and take a picture that not only followed the project description but also meant something to me. I didn’t want to focus too much on the color of fall or the falling leaves, however I feel like they added a perfect touch by being in the foreground without popping out as the main focus. Scotts is the small town that my house happens to be placed in and the same town I attended elementary school in. My childhood memories are full of going to Kalamazoo County Parks — which preserve beauty in places that are accessible for everyone to see — so it was only fitting to take a picture of a park that happened to share the name of my hometown. We would go sledding, hiking, or traipsing around the dog park, enjoying the peace and raw beauty parks such as Scotts Mill have to offer. When I went to the park to take this photo, I had to search for certain details such as shadows, and lighting which allowed me to notice the fine details of Scotts Mill County Park. My goal was to highlight the miniscule attributes such as the sign on the building that added to the beauty of this park. Through this photograph, I feel like a new light was shed onto my hometown: Scotts, Michigan.

Congratulations to Leyah Buiskool of Vicksburg High School for having her photograph make the cover of the South County News. It was chosen from the theme of 'My Hometown' for the 2024 February edition. Students at VHS were asked to photograph and write about what their idea of their hometown looked like to them. Students from Mr. Lindeman's photography classes were all eligible to submit images and writings. The artist statement that accompanied the photograph was weighted heavily. Along with Leyah's photo were four other students who were runners-up for the cover. Their images can be seen inside the paper along with artist statements on pages 2 and 3.

A very special thank you to Kathy Forsythe and the staff at South County News for making this happen for these students. This marked the second year that the South County News sponsored this contest.

Here is Leyah's artist statement that accompanied her photo:

Vicksburg couldn't be what it is now without the history behind it. This picture “Bloom History” as I call it, expresses the feeling of Vicksburg, the old and the new. When did Vicksburg become a town? What was life like for the first people in Vicksburg? These are questions that make up some of Vicksburg’s history. The ‘57 Chevy represents the history of the village and likely drove through the streets of Vicksburg. The town was busy with cars and horses and buggies, kids crying on the sidewalk because they couldn't have a piece of candy in the store, men carrying wood down the road and women loading the cars with groceries. Further down the road, you can see a filling station, people filling their cars with gas that only costs 30 cents a gallon. The Village Garage represents where the first cars would go if they needed maintenance, to become the perfect car. Driving in, you could smell fumes of oil and gas. You could hear the rumbling of another car next to you. You could see the rugged wood that supports the building. This image encompasses the passion my dad and I share for old cars, Vicksburg’s history, and the roots that my family and I have established growing up in Vicksburg. Vicksburg is my hometown, I’ve lived here all my life. This beautiful town started the same way all other hometowns have started: one person, one family, one building, and one stake in the ground. Soon other people started coming, venturing in on horse and buggy, and then rolling into town in cars. My old car “JDbloom” has been in my family for about a year now, and I always wonder where it has been, what hometowns has it driven through, and the history behind it. People who travel could have gone through Vicksburg, my hometown. Maybe some celebrities, maybe your great grandparents who live in the Netherlands, relatives who live in Florida, or an aunt who lives the next town away. Vicksburg has more history than we know. That's why I love this picture of my hometown and the history behind it, knowing there is more than what I can see now.

VHS Photography I classes had the privilege of hosting freelance photographer, Tim Reilly this past Monday. Tim spoke to our photography classes about the accomplishments, hardships, and challenges of being a freelance photographer. He shared with the students his most recent body of work from the MHSAA Football Championship game of the Muskegon Big Reds! Tim has expressed interest in visiting again in the fall and photographing a VHS football game with select student photographers! The kids are very exciting and anticipating a fall return! Tim has developed a unique style through the unique lenses and his favorite editing software, Lightroom.
Tim stressed to the students that it's the relationships along the way that he cherishes the most. I remember when I first met Tim at a South Bend Cubs game when I was playing catch with my two boys on the field. He asked me if I would let him photograph us. I was floored when he asked for my email and didn't take a dime of my money. His generosity with his time and gifts is what makes Tim stand out against the rest of the world. From there it sparked a friendship that I value like a brother. Thanks for taking the time and energy in visiting us. We value you and your work Tim Reilly! The world is a better place because of you and the students simply love ya man! Great job as usual!

Thank you Seniors!
