This weekend, I had the honor of attending the Vicksburg premiere of a documentary celebrating one of our own, Dr. Jane Ellen McAllister.

A proud Vicksburg native, Dr. McAllister became the first African American woman in the United States to earn a Ph.D. in education, receiving her doctorate from Columbia University in 1929. Over a career spanning more than five decades, she trained thousands of teachers across the South and opened doors that had long been closed.

“My Mind To Me Is a Kingdom: The Legacy of Dr. Jane Ellen McAllister” tells her remarkable story. The film was named Best Feature Documentary at the Jackson Film Festival, earned the Mary E. Mills Social Justice Impact Award in Tennessee, and received a Special Achievement Award from the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters.

As we look to the future, I believe it’s important that we take time to remember and honor the people who came before us, telling their stories and inspiring the next generation along the way.

As we continue our work to build a safer, stronger, and smarter Vicksburg, let us stop to honor one of the trailblazers who was far ahead of her time, Dr. McAllister.

This six-session, hands-on program gives participants the tools, resources, and expert guidance to develop, test, and strengthen their business ideas.
