The Lunenburg County Post No. 9954 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars was organized on March 30, 1949 at Melodee Hall with thirty-four charter members. First officers of the post were John E. Price, (Senior Vice-Commander); Robert A. Johnson, (Junior Vice-Commander); George E. Gallion, (Quartermaster); Edward W. Saunders, (Advocate); Calvin F. Ingram, (Chaplin); Charles N. Shean, (Surgeon); Raymond A
. Buchanan, Sidney L. Harding, and Jess L. Higgenbottom, (Trustees). Appointed as Adjutant was Royal H. Buchanan. Members were given the obiligation by the Department Adjutant W.I. Wooddell. Melodee Hall, on route 40 between Kenbridge and Victoria, remained the meeting place of the VFW. In the fall of 1954, the post purchased the building from R.C. Hamlett for a generously small sum. During the years of 1970 and 1971, the building was remodeled and enlarged under the leadership of Command Edgar B. Ashworth. A new kitchen and dining area were added, as well as a basement. In 1992 the post was required to relocate its facility due to a major state road developement project. Graciously, the Town of Victoria donated 7 acres to the Post, whereby the post had a new building constructed and moved in June 1992 where it presently resides. Current membership is 168 on roll with 120 life members. The post in conjunction with the ladies auxillary sponsor many fund raisers throughout the year. Proceeds from these are donated locally to the Public Library, Community Center, Rescue Squads, Easter Seals, YMCA, Patrick Henry Home for Boys, Disabled Vets McGuire VA Hospital, Junior Olympics, Russell Moon Scholarship, American Lung Foundation, Cancer Society, Salem Veterans Hospital, SADD Drug Program Central High School, Boy and Girl Scouts and Babe Ruth Baseball. Additionally they sponsor "Voice of Democracy" contest in the local high school along with "Patriots Pin" award. An annual Youth Fishing Tournament is conducted at the Post's facility. Flags are donated to local Schools and Scout organizations. The Post has a Ladies Auxilary which was organized in October of 1955 with (18) eighteen members. Hellen Ashworth was its first president. Presently there are 193 members on roll, who support the Post in its services and carry on additional projects of their own.
