The District African American Parent Advisory Committee (DAAPAC) kicked off the school year this week with a 90's-themed gathering featuring numerous community groups, vendors, music, food, and fun! All members of our district community are welcome to the DAAPAC meetings, which are held at different sites throughout the school year. This month's host was Victor Valley High School. Thanks to everyone who made this event a success!

Some of the best moments from Kickoff 2026, as captured by Rena Ventimiglia:

1-3. The VVHS Drum Line rocked the house.

4. Silverado freshman Samantha Mamesah wowed the crowd with her rendition of the National Anthem.

5. Baseball and softball players from across the district hyped up the crowd and threw out T-shirts.

6-8. This year's Kickoff had a baseball theme, and Superintendent Carl Coles told more than 1,200 staff members "welcome to the Big Leagues." The district's test scores are the best in the High Desert, and VVUHSD's A-G college readiness is not only the best in the local community but among the highest in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Coles wore a Jackie Robinson jersey in honor of the player who broke baseball's color barrier, making an analogy between Robinson's legacy and the way our work reaches far beyond the classroom.

9. Coles honored VVUHSD's counselors for the important support they offer to students as they navigate high school and the quest for higher education.

10. Silverado High School Heritage Coordinator Oshale Hill inspired the crowd with a speech about the impact staff can have on the lives of students.

11. Adelanto High School senior Anna Herrera spoke about challenges she has faced and how staff have helped her persevere. She was joined by her parents onstage.

12-14. One of VVUHSD's newest employees has four legs and a keen nose. Astor, the VVUHSD Police Department's new K-9 officer, was ceremonially sworn in at the Kickoff.

We honored our 2026 Employees of the Year: Chaz Chao, Computer Information Systems Technician, VVUHSD TechEd Department; Jared Nichols, Math Teacher, Cobalt Institute of Math & Science; and Heather Conkle, Principal, Silverado High School. These three individuals were recognized for going above and beyond for students, families and fellow staff throughout the year!

20. There was a moment of silence for three staff members we lost this past school year: Anna Lee and Elvin Momon Jr. of Silverado, and Nancy Noble of Hook Jr. High. These three individuals are dearly missed, and we carry their memories with us as we go forth into the new school year.

Congratulations to our 2026 Employees of the Year! Our staff submitted nominations at the end of the last school year, recognizing their outstanding peers. A panel of representatives from our classified and certificated employee associations as well as the management team selected the three winners:

Classified: Chaz Chao, Computer Information Systems Technician, VVUHSD TechEd Department

Certificated: Jared Nichols, Math Teacher, Cobalt Institute of Math & Science

Management: Heather Conkle, Principal, Silverado High School

These three individuals were recognized for going above and beyond for students, families and fellow staff throughout the year.

The winners were announced at our annual Kickoff event on Tuesday. They had no idea they’d be receiving the awards, and we surprised them by bringing their family members onstage to celebrate.

Thank you to these outstanding employees and to all who nominated their peers this year!

[SOUND UP] We started our annual Kickoff event today with a couple of amazing student performances. Samantha Mamesah, who went to Hook Junior High School and starts her freshman year at Silverado High School tomorrow,
wowed us with a simply astounding performance of the National Anthem that needs to be heard to be believed. The crowd was also energized by the rhythmic brilliance of the Victor Valley High School Drum Line. Thank you to their teacher Steven Bevis, and thanks to all of these talented students for showing up a day before school starts to entertain more than 1,200 staff members!

Adelanto High School celebrated its 12th graduating class on Wednesday night at Julian Weaver Stadium, sending off 503 graduates who collectively set a new standard of excellence for the school.

Adelanto continues to surpass the county average by maintaining graduation rates that lead the area, driven by a student body with rapidly climbing A-G completion rates. With unprecedented levels of college readiness, this year’s grads secured the most college acceptances in school history.

The Saints also maintained the region’s highest CTE completion rate, with multiple graduates earning industry licenses and entering professional trade unions straight out of high school. Several others are enlisting in the United States Armed Forces.

Leading the class were Valedictorian Betsy Mejia, who earned a full-ride to UC Berkeley, and Salutatorian Oscar Herrera, who is headed to UCLA to study mathematics with the aim of becoming a teacher. Betsy’s achievement follows her sister, Class of 2020 Salutatorian Abigail Mejia, who went on to graduate from Harvard. Another notable grad is QuestBridge scholar Alana Chavez, who earned a full ride to Pomona College, one of the prestigious Claremont Colleges.

“Graduates, remember you don't need an invitation to lead,” Principal Ebony Purcell said in her speech. “Don't wait for a seat at the table; you have everything you need to build your own, define your success, and live a life without limits. As you step into this fast changing world, what will determine your path are the choices you make and the risks you take. Take those risks thoughtfully, move with intention, and leave the world better than you found it.”

Lakeview Leadership Academy celebrated its 6th commencement ceremony at High Desert Church’s Powell Auditorium on Friday night.

All of the Spartans’ 38 seniors graduated this year, and 32 have attended Lakeview since their 7th grade year. The grade 7-12 school started as a middle school before expanding to include high school grades.

Principal Felicia Limbrick noted in her speech that 22 of these grads are A-G college ready, 15 earned the Golden State Seal of Merit, and 85 percent will be attending colleges and universities (including UCLA) or the military (Issac Gurule has already committed to the Marine Corps).

This year’s Valedictorian is Edie Al Hasna, and the Salutatorian is Julia Quintana. Another notable grad is Tyler Jarvis, who completed two career technical education pathways, earned industry recognized certifications in web animation and ethics in the workplace, and was named the MDCP Student of the Year in addition to winning the inaugural Unity T-Shirt Design contest.
