Councilmembers Steve Potter and Chuck Anderson are both big fans of Jeremy Schottler's Italian Gourmet Deli. Not a week has gone by in 17 years that the Potters haven't picked up their weekly supply of perfectly sliced Palma prosciutto or enjoyed the deli's authentic Italian fare. The Andersons appreciate the fresh pasta sheets used for the traditional Christmas Day lasagna and the authentic Italian sausage from New Jersey. Which Vienna business do you visit every single week? #LoveLocal

For now, take a tip from Councilmember Ray Brill and consider getting that friend a gift card to your favorite Vienna coffee joint and using it with her/him later in the spring. #LoveLocal

@TownofVienna, Oakton High School teacher here, I'm in search of Community members who could speak with my students about UN Sustainable Development Goal #15 - life on land IN FAIRFAX COUNTY. This would be a virtual "press conference" tentatively scheduled for Monday, March 1st. I have so many more details that I could share, but I will add those to the comments 🙂
Dear Mayor Colbert and other council members, This season, despite barriers and sprays, I lost almost all my milkweed, 3 ferns, my downy skull cap, 3 ageratum, 10 baby oaks and redbuds, 2 buttonbush and 4 uncaged Fairfax Releaf maples. Every few days there's a nasty surprise waiting for us. What have they taken today? Each deer destroys over a ton of vegetation per year. Not only are deer ruining our gardens, they're also wreaking incalculable damage on our forests by eating away much of the understory - valuable bird habitat - as well as tree seedlings. Would you hold a public hearing on Vienna's deer problem? At the moment TOV prohibits homeowners from inviting archers into their yards, despite a decades long safety record. In private yards, licensed archers may only aim from a height, and at a standing animal only. So, the ground stops the arrow. Archers also cull in parks. So excellent is the safety record that the parks don't even close during archery season. (Since Va began tracking hunting injuries in 1959, no bystanders have been injured by an archer hunting deer anywhere in the Commonwealth. See https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/wildlife/archery-program) My neighbors want to keep their exotic ornamentals, even invasive plants like vinca ground cover, wintercreeper, English ivy, burning bush, nandina, buddleia, and bush honeysuckle, as deer don't eat it. They don't want to keep stinky deer repellent in their fridge, nor do they want the bother of spraying it on. They want plants easy to maintain. Tell the County to cull the deer and then come back and we'll talk native plant. Trees - same thing. The 3 sugar maples I planted last fall for a neighbor got chewed down to stubs. The neighbor was annoyed and said not to talk to her anymore about trees. She'd like to help bring birds back as much as anyone else, but all she's ended up with is 3 scruffy spots spoiling her lawn. Their friends, a couple with no trees, were interested in getting maples and oaks from FairfaxReleaf. Now it looks like they're going to go for a gingko, crepe mrytles, azalea, and buddleia bushes. They don't want to look out at wire cages around their trees. They understand declining bird populations and want to help, but with a full-time job each, a busy social life, and two kids, they don't want to deal with deerproofing their yard too, and who can blame them. If only it were as simple as clearing up a bit a your lawn and putting in natives! The precious native seeds entrusted to me from Vienna Plant Swap members I had to give away. If I had planted them, the young shoots would only disappeared into the endless gullets of marauding deer. These seeds were carefully gathered from living plants. Such seeds, if left on their plants, would have fed hungry birds. Deer meet the definition of pests just like rats and mice. As vectors of Lyme disease, they're vermin. As causes of car accidents, they're dangerous. Very cute, but still pests. Your feelings, my feelings, have no importance. Reestablishing a healthy eco-system has nothing to do with anyone's feelings. It's not about little tricks you've honed to deter deer - repellent spray, growing herbs, fencing, motion sprinklers, tree tubes/wire cages, making do with plants that don't appeal to deer - these, often costly, measures only solve the problem in a piecemeal fashion for individual yards. If some yards are deer-proofed, the deer will just help themselves to other peoples' yards and from parks. It's a zero sum game. (No net gain.) The deer will still be out there degrading habitat. Deer are either communal pets, in which case we establish proper feeding stations and vet services, or deer are pests and we kill them. Let's apply some logic here! Science please, not feelings! See article below - long but worth every word. Fairfax County's deer management program provides a list of archers who, at no cost, will cull deer on private property. Let's use them! The venison can be donated to Hunters for the Hungry. https://vnps.org/manage-white-tailed-deer-to-protect-our-natural-heritage/?fbclid=IwAR1AiZ9EuJG-ZCNy4dEjwJsrxLbHU6lH9RfgPAjjIz5gnpCmIy_8wbtTrQw
Free Paper Shredding event in Vienna next Saturday. Email [email protected] and I can send you a site map for the truck.
There is a post on the Vienna Virtual Community Page (formerly VVYS) about a potential case of police harassment of a young black male, a Vienna resident, by the Vienna Town Police. Given the current climate and recent commitments made by the Vienna Police Department, I think it would be helpful to the community if someone from the Mayors Office and the Vienna Police department looked into this and commented.
tl;dr Halt the $14M construction of a brand new Vienna police building because this money can be spent on better things! Petition here: http://chng.it/4p2WX68Dqx 23 other James Madison High School alumni and I are calling on the Town of Vienna to halt the Vienna Police Construction Project until the town council launches a formal commission and engages in meaningful dialogue with the community to discuss the best way forward with regards to public safety! The petition far better articulates this, so I highly encourage you to read it! And then sign! http://chng.it/4p2WX68Dqx
We #love the new Love sign!
Is there any discussion of defunding the Vienna police department or abolishing it all together?
Morning all... this may not be the right FB page, but are there any parents/business in the Vienna Community who have organized some degree of schooling support for their elementary school-age children? My granddaughter is a Cunningham Kindergartener and Fairfax County is having issues with online instruction. We are searching for any alternatives to keep the little one moving forward in her skill-sets. Any suggestions or ideas? Both parents are essential workers and unfortunately, I cannot help, as well. Thanks in advance!
Good Day. I’m posting in hope of being able to offer some assistance with the community. My company D’Artagnan is the purveyor of sustainably raised meat. We work with the best chefs, retailers, grocers and home chefs to provide antibiotic free and hormone free proteins, mushrooms and truffles. I have experienced the challenge and frustrations from the grocery stores and butcher shops being out of stock on much needed items. For some the option to leave the security of home isn’t an option due to health concerns. Furthermore, if you’re able to find these items online, scheduling a delivery is next to impossible. I have coordinated a program for residents to get free delivery direct to their doorstep via our refrigerated trucks. If you are interested, go to the page I have set up and click on the link http://homedelivery.dartagnan.com/vienna Please ensure to enter Vienna in the promo code at check out! I hope to make this program a useful and viable option for the community during this crisis. Stay safe and be well everyone!
Thanks for the lack of warning town of Vienna. Woke up to this going on. Can’t get out of my driveway and my daughter whose in her way won’t be able to get in either. Why aren’t you arming residents about things like this when repair is not an emergency.
Would love to treat our Public Works crew to lunch when they come by this week. Any suggestions on the best way to do that Vienna VA Foodies Town of Vienna Thank you!❤️
Is the TOV still doing bulk pickup? I thought I saw a post about a couple weeks back but cannot find anything.
