Sunday strolls in Malabar just got a safety upgrade! ☀️👟

If you’re out enjoying the breeze along U.S. 1 this weekend, maybe grabbing a bite at the iconic Yellow Dog Café, you’ll spot a new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) at the crosswalk. In August, FDOT Central Florida activated this new overhead signal to help pedestrians and bicyclists cross safely while boosting driver awareness along the corridor.

Unsure of what to do when you’re driving past a PHB? It’s simple:
⚫ No lights? Continue through as normal.
🟡 Yellow? Slow and stop. Someone is trying to cross.
🔴 STOP and let them cross the street safely!
🔴💥 Flashing Red? Proceed ONLY if no one is in the crosswalk.

Please keep an extra eye out for your neighbors on the road! This PHB is part of ongoing safety improvements on U.S. 1 between Century Oaks Circle and Myers Drive.

We’re still beaming with pride over the fantastic young riders who graduated from the Junior Bike Safety Bootcamp hosted by the City of Titusville, Florida! 🚲✨

The SCTPO was thrilled to partner on this initiative by bringing our RollRight educational presentation, providing FREE helmets, and handing out fun safety goodies to help everyone ride smart.

On Saturday, August 29, students gained the hands-on skills and confidence needed to navigate their community safely. A huge thank you to the Titusville Police Department Florida for their leadership, Miracle City Composite for generously providing every participant with a FREE bicycle, and the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation for keeping everyone fueled with lunch.

Thank you to all of the partners, and enthusiastic families who made this event such a success. Keep rolling safe out there! 👏

The SCTPO office is closed today in recognition of Labor Day. As you celebrate, remember to stay alert and safe on our roadways. Slow down, watch for pedestrians and bicyclists, avoid distractions, and ALWAYS plan for a sober ride home. 🚘📵🚸
