A watershed is the entire area of land that drains to a common body of water. Think of it as a funnel β€” rain falling anywhere within that funnel, whether on a neighborhood lawn, a parking lot, a rooftop or a field will eventually drain toward the same destination. Even when the land seems flat, small grade changes can carry water long distances.

Much of Brevard County is within the Indian River Lagoon watershed, with western portions of the county draining towards the St. Johns River. This means that land use and everyday habits across our county can influence the health of connected waterways and the lagoon from Titusville in the north to Micco in the south.

In developed areas, the connection between land and water is especially direct. Natural landscapes like forests and wetlands help slow and filter stormwater before it reaches surface waters. In urbanized areas, hard surfaces like roads, driveways, and rooftops prevent water from soaking into the ground, causing runoff to move faster and in greater volumes across the landscape.

Stormwater infrastructure in our areaβ€”the drains, pipes, and canals that manage that moving waterβ€”often carry runoff to the lagoon or its tributaries without treatment.

This is why what happens on your street, in your yard, and in your neighborhood matters so much to the lagoon. Pollution generated miles from the shoreline can travel through the stormwater system and arrive at the water's edge within hours of a rain event.

Small everyday actions across a watershed can add up over time. Want to learn more? Follow along as we share practical ways to help support lagoon-friendly habits throughout our community. πŸ’™πŸŒΏ

πŸŒπŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ Happy World Bicycle Day! πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸŒΏ

Let's celebrate the simple, sustainable, and powerful joy of riding a bicycle and how this small act can make a BIG difference for our local environment.

Every time you choose to bike instead of drive, you're not just improving your health - you're helping protect the Indian River Lagoon. πŸ’§πŸ¬

βœ… Less traffic = less air pollution
βœ… Fewer cars = less runoff into our waterways
βœ… More biking = a cleaner, healthier lagoon

The Indian River Lagoon is one of North America’s most biodiverse estuaries β€” home to manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, and over 4,000 species. Let’s keep it thriving!

So this World Bicycle Day, dust off that bike and ride with purpose.
For your health. For your community. For the lagoon. πŸŒŠπŸ’™

β˜€οΈ June is here, and while the Florida heat is turning up, so is our commitment to keeping our waterways clean!

Join us for two opportunities to make a difference this month:

πŸ—“οΈ June 13 – Eau Gallie East Cleanup at Squid Lips
πŸ—“οΈ June 27 – SR528 Cleanup at Kayak Beach

Whether you're a longtime volunteer or joining us for the first time, every piece of trash removed helps protect our rivers, lagoon, wildlife, and community.

You'll notice our monthly Bracco Pond Park cleanup with the Cocoa Rotary is taking a summer break due to the heat. Don't worry, we'll be back out there in a couple of months when temperatures become a little more volunteer-friendly!

A special thank you to our June Sponsor of the Month, MBV Engineering πŸŽ‰

Since 1983, MBV Engineering has provided comprehensive civil, structural, surveying, and environmental engineering services throughout the Space Coast and Treasure Coast. Their commitment to our community goes beyond engineering projectsβ€”they've been incredible supporters of Waterway Warriors and our mission to protect and restore local waterways.

Sponsors like MBV help provide the supplies, equipment, and resources that allow us to continue hosting impactful cleanup events throughout the year. Please join us in thanking them for their support!

πŸ“ Mark your calendars, invite a friend, and let's keep making a difference together.
