Fire departments emphasize that space heaters must be kept at least 36 inches (3 feet) away from anything flammable, including furniture, bedding, and people. Always plug heaters directly into a wall outlet—never an extension cord or power strip—and turn them off when leaving the room or sleeping.

Key Heater Safety Guidelines:

The 3-Foot Rule: Maintain a 3-foot (1 meter) clearance from furniture, blankets, clothes, and curtains.

Plug Safely: Plug heaters directly into a wall socket; avoid extension cords, which can overheat and cause fires.

Supervision & Shutdown: Never leave a heater running unattended, when sleeping, or when children/pets are unsupervised.

Safety Features: Use only heaters with automatic shut-off (if they tip over) and verify they have a safety certification label from a testing laboratory.

Surface: Place the heater on a solid, flat, and level surface.

Placement: Keep heaters out of high-traffic areas and never block exits.

Maintenance: Inspect cords for cracks, damage, or loose connections before each use.

Prohibited Uses: Never use an oven or stove to heat your home.

Alternative Heating: If using a fuel-powered heater, ensure it is in a well-ventilated area and use only the designated fuel.

Smoke Detectors: Ensure working smoke detectors are installed on every level of the home.

Fireplaces: Use a sturdy screen for fireplaces and let ashes cool in a metal container, never in the house.
