On yesterdays menu the cadets did some PT of course but they also did some work with our crime scene tech and fingerprint analysis units. They watched Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) do what they do best. We took a field trip to the Knox County jail and went on a tour of the facility. The cadets sharpened their defensive tactics skills then watched a K9 demonstration with ISP and Knox County Sheriff’s Department.
The night ended with some solid team work. The cadets participated in a live scenario where they were called out at midnight to assist a Trooper requesting backup on a traffic stop with an uncooperative suspect. The cadets donned their gear and took off as the Trooper began to pursue the fleeing suspect into a nearby building. The Trooper reported being hit and became unresponsive. The cadets ran into the building, actively searching for the suspect who ran out the back door short time later. After another short foot pursuit, the cadets apprehended the suspect and began processing the scene.

Yesterday started before the sun came up. Conservation Officer Matt Clark gave a period of instruction. We were exposed to our cybercrimes and ICAC unit and K9.
The cadets participated in some case law debates and a simulator ran by Vincennes University Professor Tom Cunningham.
MedEvac pilots grounded their helicopter and gave a presentation to the cadets and we finished up the day with an ISP scuba diver and a friendly game of water volleyball.
Troopers vs cadets, can you guess who won?

We’re past the first day jitters and hopped in with both feet. We’ve got some PT (exercise) in, had some classes on investigations with our detectives. We were up close and personal with ISP pilots. Some team building exercises helped us understand the importance of communication. And just when we needed cooled off, the fire department really pulled through!

First Sergeant Jack Eads (Trooper Lee’s grandfather) helped run summer camps when they began in 1970. Eads brought the summer camps to Vincennes University a few years later. Times have changed but the process of shaping our youth and community have not.
