As today ends “National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (NPSTW)” on behalf of the Battleground Volunteer Fire Departmentwe would like to thank you all for your service and everything you do for the communities and Fire Departments. We hear you and we see you, as someone who has been a Volunteer Firefighter/Medical for the past 15 years we go through a lot of Traumatic calls with Unfortunate outcomes that live with us on a daily basis, these dispatchers go through the same Traumatic incidents except they are hearing it on a phone line and trying everything they can to help individuals over the phone along with dispatching ambulances and Fire Departments to the scene and a lot of times they remain on the phone until they know help has arrived. A lot of people overlook Dispatchers and don’t realize that they are going through the same thing that we are on the front lines, but we see it and respect everything you do!

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mr Billy McCravy who sadly passed away yesterday morning. Billy was one of our founding members and served the Battleground Fire Department for 50 years and also served in the United States Air Force, Billy was 94 years old and was married to his wife Vernell for 72 years. He was proud of the department and the members that serve it, he would show up to workdays and was insistent in giving a helping hand. Billy’s passing leaves a void to many that will not be filled, but find peace in knowing he is rejoicing with the Lord. We ask that everyone keeps his family, friends and the members of the Fire Dept in prayers as we prepare for the funeral of this amazing man.

Funeral arrangements:
-Viewing is Monday from 12pm to 2pm @ Cullman Heritage
-Service starts @ 2pm with a Fire Department procession to follow from the funeral home to the burial site @ Macedonia Baptist Church

BGVFD was dispatched @ 12:09PM on 11/28/25 to an out of control fire. BGVFD Truck 1, Engine 3, and Engine 5 responded with 7 personnel. Units arrived to find a pasture on fire that was endangering a Structure. Units immediately began protecting the structure and trying to get the fire under control but due to the fire being quickly spread by the wind additional resources was requested for brush trucks, ATV’s, and Forestry placed on standby due to it spreading toward the wood-lines. Units was able to get the fire contained with roughly 20 acres being burned. We would like to thank everyone for the assistance from multiple departments and the property owners for assisting us.
