DES MOINES, Iowa - The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is partnering with law enforcement across Iowa to support the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Click It or Ticket high-visibility enforcement effort. This seatbelt-focused enforcement campaign will run from May 18-31, 2026.

Seatbelts remain the single best defense against serious injury, and while most Iowans take safety seriously, even one unbuckled fatality is too many. In 2025, 121 people who died in Iowa traffic crashes were not wearing a seatbelt. These unrestrained occupants accounted for 47% of all 2025 traffic fatalities, a tragic number that is entirely preventable.

“No matter the type of vehicle you’re traveling in, where you’re seated, or what type of road you’re driving on, the best way to protect yourself in a crash is to buckle up,” says Brett Tjepkes, Iowa GTSB Bureau Chief. “If this enforcement effort helps people to change their habits and start buckling up consistently, we’ll consider the mission a success.”

All it takes is one click and a few seconds to protect yourself and your loved ones every time you get in the car. Make safety a habit by buckling up in every seat, every time.

GTSB works with city, county, state, and local organizations to develop and implement strategies to reduce death and injury on Iowa roads using federally funded grants.

This week at the Iowa Police Chiefs Conference in Coralville, the Vinton Police Department was proud to officially accept its ILEAP Accreditation Award.

Accepting the award on behalf of the department were Ted Paxton, Ben Parmater, and Tyneal Herger, along with their spouses.

ILEAP (Iowa Law Enforcement Accreditation Program) accreditation is a voluntary program designed to ensure that law enforcement agencies operate under recognized professional standards and best practices. Achieving accreditation requires an extensive review of department policies, procedures, training, evidence handling, operations, reporting practices, and accountability measures. Departments must provide documented proof of compliance with numerous standards and undergo a thorough outside assessment process.

Accreditation is not something achieved overnight. It takes months of preparation, organization, teamwork, and dedication by department staff to ensure that policies and practices meet the high standards established by the program.

The purpose of ILEAP accreditation is to strengthen professionalism, improve efficiency and accountability, reduce liability, and enhance public trust and confidence in law enforcement agencies serving their communities.

We are proud of the hard work and commitment that went into earning this recognition and remain dedicated to providing professional service to the citizens of Vinton and the surrounding community.

🚨 Even the Chief Isn’t Safe… 🚨

Apparently, not even Ted Paxton is above the watchful eye of… scam artists. Yes, you read that right — the Chief of Police himself recently received one of those “You have unpaid tolls, click here immediately or else…” text messages.

We’re relieved to report he did NOT rush to pay mysterious toll fees for roads he never traveled on. (We did briefly consider issuing a warrant for his arrest just to keep things interesting, but decided against it.)

All jokes aside, these scam messages are circulating everywhere and can look surprisingly legitimate. If you receive a text about unpaid tolls, suspicious packages, or urgent payment demands:

🔹 Don’t click the link
🔹 Don’t provide personal or financial information
🔹 Delete the message
🔹 When in doubt, contact the agency directly using a trusted phone number

If the Chief can get them, anyone can. Stay sharp out there, Vinton!
