Now that spring is officially here and more walks are being taken in the cemetery, please remember to keep your dog on a leash and clean up after them.
Bags are available at the front gate.
If your dog wants to frolic, there is the dog park.

Please think of the mowers and trimmers as they walk each square foot of the grounds.

The spring cleanup is done. Bring on the spring and summer decorations.

I've walked by every grave and headstone.
Easily removed Christmas decorations are between the chapel and the maintenance shed. They will stay there for a week. Come get yours.

I've taken the liberty of removing shredded flags from the graves. They also are between the chapel and maintenance shed. Jim Shivers and the VFW/Legion have good quality grave flags for your vet.

Thank you to Russell Jenkins for walking with me, and to all of you who cleaned up early.

Bring on the color!

The first cleaning sweep is through the cemetery. The faded and ragged decorations have been collected and gathered.

Pick up your Christmas / winter decorations, please.

If you have flags for your vets, please make sure the flags are in good shape

I’ll make another sweep when the weather is good and get the cemetery ready for spring.

Once again....
Spring cleanup at the Village Cemetery is Tuesday, March 10th 2026.

The main objective of this sweep is to get decorations off the ground and clean out the trash [faded or damaged decorations]
This will make it easy to weed-eat without damage to decorations

Several things can stay.
= Shepherd hooks can stay.
= Anything[?] hanging from the shepherd hook can stay.
= Anything[?] in headstone vases can stay.
= Gravestone saddles[?] can stay
= Current seasonal decorations can stay.
= For current "stick in the ground" plastic vases, a Cemetery provided flower holder should be used.

Solar lights, figurines, and plaques can go up on the stone's foundation.

[?] All faded or grossly out of season decorations [located anywhere] will be removed during the cleanup.

It will be a good cleanup, and we will announce when it is time for spring and summer decorations.

Stay Tuned

1991 westend Ash trees

The next time you drive or walk the Village Cemetery, you might notice trees
on the west end missing.

The five ash trees that border the 1991 Section have become deeply infested with and
weakened by the emerald ash bore. Some trees are in the process of dying. Some
have died and are in danger of falling. So far we have been quite lucky.

As a preventative measure, the Village maintenance crew will be trimming and
felling those trees which we deem a danger to the graves, the headstones and
the memorials.

This cleanup should not affect any headstone, bench or memorial. Please contact
me with your concerns.

Will the trees be replaced with something hardier? That is a topic for the
Cemetery Board, the Sexton and the Village Board. Your input is appreciated.

Viola Village Cemetery roads after the first significant snow

The first snow always brings changes to our lives and how we interact with our environment.

As Sexton, I have an agreement with the Village maintenance crew that the Cemetery be plowed last.

The Village streets have the most life and traffic and deserve priority, so the village can again approach normal.

The Village Maintenance crew has caught up and has lightly plowed the road around the cemetery perimeter - south, west, north and east. It is still slushy and deep in parts, but passable.

However, the North/South lanes through the center of the graves have not been plowed because they are extremely narrow and we do not want to cause damage to any headstone, grave or memorial.
There have been misjudgments where the North/South lanes lie and graves have been driven over - headstones narrowly missed - thinking it was a plotted lane.

When you come to decorate your family's plot, please drive on and park on the perimeter road and walk the remaining distance.

Yes, it is an inconvenience, but a temporary one.

Your cooperation and help is greatly appreciated by the Maintenance crew, the Cemetery Board and the Sexton.
