🌼 Our Flowers Are Bouncing Back — Let’s Help Them Thrive! 🌼

The pollinator flowers in the Virden Square are finally starting to bounce back after the shock of planting and this intense heat. More flowers will be going in throughout the week, and the beds will continue filling out as we move toward fall.

As we build the official Virden Bee City site over the next three years, we kindly ask everyone for a little extra thoughtfulness:

• Please do not pick the flowers — they’re still establishing their roots.
• Please don’t drop trash or food in the flower beds.
• Please keep pets and foot traffic out of the beds so the plants can grow strong and healthy.

This is a work in progress, and every small act of care helps us transform the Square into a thriving pollinator habitat for our community. Thank you for your understanding, your patience, and your support as we make this beautiful change together.

Virden is growing — literally. 🌸💛

🌼 Virden Bee City Update — Thank You, Mayor, City Council & Pokey! 🌼

Monday Night our Mayor, City Council, and Pokey gave a unanimous green light to something truly special — the official Virden Bee City pollinator garden site right here on the Virden Square. We are deeply grateful for your support, your leadership, and your commitment to making Virden a healthier, more beautiful place for generations to come.

Over the next few weeks, the aging bushes on the square will be removed and replaced with a native pollinator garden managed under the Virden Historical Society, who will take full responsibility for installation, care, and long‑term stewardship.

🌱 What is a Pollinator Garden?

A pollinator garden is a thoughtfully planned planting of native flowers, grasses, and host plants that support bees, butterflies, moths, hummingbirds, and other beneficial pollinators.

It is NOT a bee hive installation.
There will be no hives, no boxes, and no managed colonies placed on the square.
Instead, this garden simply provides the natural food sources pollinators already rely on — nectar, pollen, and habitat — using plants that belong in Illinois ecosystems.

Pollinator gardens are low-maintenance, environmentally friendly, and designed to boost biodiversity while adding beauty to public spaces.

🏛️ A City‑Approved Historical Society Project

The City Council voted to officially convert the square’s planting area under the Virden Historical Society, allowing us to maintain, improve, and preserve it as part of our long-term beautification and heritage initiatives.

This means:

• We will handle installation
• We will manage upkeep
• We will ensure compliance with Bee City USA standards
• We will integrate the garden into Virden’s historical and community identity

This is a milestone moment for Virden — and we’re ready to get to work.

🌻 All Hands on Deck — Let’s Garden!

The Route 66 Centennial is just 10 weeks away, and this project will be a centerpiece of our town’s pride. We have exactly enough time to transform the square into a vibrant, native, pollinator‑friendly landmark.

Who’s ready to garden?
Who’s ready to make history?
Let’s do this, Virden.

We are thrilled to share some wonderful news with our community — the Virden Historical Society has officially completed Stage One and Stage Two of securing our 501(c)(3) nonprofit status!

We are now entering the final federal stage, which can take anywhere from a week to a year. So please send all the good luck, good vibes, and encouragement our way as we move through this last step.

In the meantime, we’ve been hard at work building a 3–5 year plan filled with meaningful projects, community improvements, historical preservation, educational programs, and some truly amazing things we cannot wait to reveal.

This journey will not happen overnight, but it will happen — and it will happen with transparency, intention, and heart. Once everything is finalized, we’ll be sharing all the incredible plans we have in store for our wonderful town.

Thank you for your patience, your support, and your belief in what Virden can become. Great things are coming. We are so excited. ❤️

✨ Congratulations, Marc!
Your impact is felt everywhere, and your recognition is celebrated by all of us.

Now a word from Marc:

So this evening I won Business Person of the Year from the VACC. I was very surprised, but thankful for the nominations. I was only told a couple days ago that I "can't take a trip this weekend and needed to be around on Thursday night." 😅 Some people know me well. Last night I wrote up a speech I was going to give, but honestly, its 110* and I wasn't trying to stand up there and be all anxious and sweaty, probably would've passed out 😅😅 but I thought I'd copy it and paste it here if you felt like reading it.

First and foremost I want to say thank you for this award. Thank you for the nominations and I am very appreciative of the recognition. Ill try to keep this short and to the point.. when i started doing this, nearly 10 years ago, I was a completely different person. I lacked discipline, structure, just kind of disheveled all around. As this business started to grow, i realized I needed to match the growth as a person.

I have always been very observant, so I would pay attention to a couple things every time.. how people felt when they dropped their car off and how they feel when they pick it up. The before and after transformations aren't limited to just the vehicle. I see it in body language, in emotions, in the unspoken things. For a moment in time, i'm bringing joy to someone that I have no idea what they could be going through.. just through cleaning their car.. as the years passed, I started to realize A Marc Above is going to be so much more than detailing.

I started doing community projects in 2020, starting with 2 Thanksgiving meals, that quickly turned to 8 with a generous donation from a customer. By Christmas we had raised $3000, fed over 50 families and I knew right then, we have the power to make a difference. Each one of us. Somewhere along the line we forgot. We forgot that we can create a community worth investing in. We can have a community put on the map for its hospitality, we saw it with the Hot Rod Power Tour a few weeks ago, hundreds of thousands of views on social media, great comments, loads of fun, just a great day for so many people. Our location hands us thousands of travelers daily from all over the world..as someone who also travels all over the world, I can assure you Virden is unique. Are our issues unique? No. But our history is, our square is, our layout is, our local businesses are.. we have so much talent in just our community alone. I want to get that talent out there, showcase our skills for these travelers to take pictures of, create good memories, send the good vibes with them. Just like the power tour, those memories of Virden went back across the entire country.

With that said, the Roots and Renewal Project has been started to revitalize the square. The banners were the first item on the agenda. My goal is to utilize local artists, fabricators, contractors, and businesses to transform our square into a hot spot for Rt 66 travelers, tourists, art enthusiasts, and history fans, not only them, but for all of us too. Remember what I said about observing people when they drop off their car to when they pick it up? We are going to do that on a much bigger level, the whole town. We have grown accustom to mediocrity, sometimes less because we think someone else is going to do it. Spoiler alert, no one is coming to save us. Its time to bring back the character, the color, the art, the pride in our small town. I promise you, the feeling is real, you'll feel it as we continue to revitalize this beautiful square.

In closing, I want to say if you'd like to get involved, please reach out. We have several exciting things going, including the official virden historical society. Both the roots and renewal project and historical society are operating on donations, so your money will go directly towards supplies, lighting, signs, whatever is needed to make this happen.

And finally, a big thank you to everyone who made these ideas successful over the years and that have also included me in their events. I have several friends/business owners/customers that don't hesitate to jump on board each time. Everything is a group effort and I have a great group of friends to work with. Im excited to see the changes in the next few months. I hope you are too. Thank you

📚✨ Books on the Square Is Getting a Facelift — AND a Mini Museum!

There’s been some confusion, so let’s clear it up with excitement and pride:
Books on the Square is NOT closing.
In fact… it’s about to be amplified in a big way.

John Alexander — owner of Books on the Square and President of our Historical Society — has generously offered a portion of his building so we can create a small, rotating historical museum space INSIDE his shop.

This isn’t replacing Books on the Square.
This is becoming part of Books on the Square — adding value, adding history, and adding reasons for people to walk through John’s doors.

And that’s not all…
Books on the Square is getting a full facelift to match this exciting new chapter:

🎨 Fresh paint
🛠️ Updated interior touches
✨ A refreshed, welcoming look
📚 A space that honors both books and history

We’re not just adding a mini museum — we’re helping elevate the entire shop.

Because of this partnership:

• Books on the Square will see more foot traffic
• John’s decades of preserving history will be celebrated publicly
• The community gets a sneak‑peek museum while we work toward a permanent location
• The shop gets a revitalized look that reflects its importance in our town

This is a temporary museum, designed to share pieces of Virden’s story while we continue working toward a larger, long‑term home for all the historical items we’ve been entrusted with.

Books on the Square isn’t going anywhere.
We’re simply adding something special to it — and giving it the glow‑up it deserves.

Books on the Square + Virden’s History = A perfect match.
We can’t wait for you to see the transformation.

🎉🎂 HAPPY 174th BIRTHDAY, VIRDEN! 🎂🎉

Founded on June 21, 1852, our town has officially been home for 174 incredible years — filled with grit, history, community, and heart. Today, we celebrate all of us who make Virden the special place it is. 💛✨

🎈 Fun Facts About Our Hometown

Each one of these is a little piece of what makes Virden truly one‑of‑a‑kind:

Founded in 1852 — Virden was officially surveyed and became a town on June 21, 1852, named after John Virden, who ran a well‑known stagecoach stop for travelers heading between Springfield, Vandalia, and St. Louis.

Route 66 Roots — From 1926–1930, the Mother Road itself ran right through Virden, connecting our little town to one of America’s most iconic highways.

Coal Country Legacy — Virden once supported over 20 coal mines, and the first shaft was sunk in 1868. Coal shaped our growth, our families, and our identity.

The 1898 Virden Mine Battle — A defining moment in U.S. labor history happened right here on October 12, 1898. The conflict between miners and strikebreakers became so significant that October 12th was later declared Miner’s Day.

A Town That Grew Fast — By 1859, just seven years after founding, Virden already had 124 buildings, multiple hotels, stores, churches, and a bustling railroad depot.

Community From the Start — Our first school was taught in 1853 in a local home, and the first sermon was delivered in the Junction House hotel before churches were built.

💛 A Message to Our Town

Today isn’t just about looking back — it’s about celebrating the people who keep Virden strong:
our families, our small businesses, our volunteers, our history lovers, our teachers, our workers, and everyone who chooses to call this place home.

Happy 174th Birthday, Virden!
Here’s to our past, our present, and the bright future we’re building together.

🚨 Urgent Community Help Needed! 🚨

Updated: we are meeting at the Golden Nugget at 5 PM tonight. Tuesday, June 16

The Route 66 Virden Historical Society has officially obtained the full collection of newspapers from The Golden Nugget, which recently closed its doors. This is a HUGE piece of Virden’s history — and now it’s up to us to save it.

We have ONLY THREE DAYS to move everything.
That means we need all hands on deck.

These papers must be carried up and down multiple flights of stairs and moved from one building to another, so we’re looking for volunteers who can help with the physical lifting and transporting.

If you’re willing to help preserve this important part of our town’s story, drop your name in the comments.
We’ll reach out and get you scheduled for a time slot.

Thank you in advance, Virden.
This is our history — and together, we’re making sure it’s not lost. ❤️💪
