When you turn on an outdoor faucet, water flows out of your hose based on pressure in the water system. However, a sudden change in water pressure can make water flow BACK in the opposite direction in a process called backflow, which can allow potential contaminants to enter the City’s water distribution system.

Traffic Alert: To safely facilitate a sanitary sewer repair, Dillon Drive will be closed between Maverick Street and Stancil Street starting at 5 p.m. today, August 7. Advance warning signs will be placed to notify motorists of the closure and detour routes. Area residents will have access to their properties at all times. This work is expected to be completed by 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 9; weather permitting.

Update: To safely facilitate this work, northbound Kempsville Road is now reduced to one lane near the intersection of Indian River Road.

Traffic Alert: Crews are responding to an emergency water repair near the intersection of Kempsville Road and Indian River Road. To safely facilitate this work, the right turn lane of northbound Kempsville Road onto eastbound Indian River Road is currently closed. This repair is expected to be complete by 7 p.m. tonight, July 8.

💧 Every week, we receive dozens of calls from residents with questions about increased water usage reflected on their City Services bills.

Recognizing an opportunity to better support residents, our employee Pamela Gray developed an initiative to help residents avoid unexpectedly high water consumption caused by unexplained usage or leaks.

Thanks to Pamela's proactive approach, residents are catching issues early, conserving water, and avoiding costly surprises. It's just one example of how our employees are working every day to make a positive difference for our community.

When Virginia Beach Public Utilities noticed a pattern of residents calling about unexplained water usage, Public Utilities employee Pamela Gray saw an opportunity. She launched a new initiative to help residents avoid unexpectedly high-water consumption caused by unexplained usage or leaks.
