This may be a #ThrowbackThursday video, but "flushable" wipes are STILL haunting our pipes to this day! Remember to only flush the 3 P's!

A terror lurks beneath the streets. "IT" is summoned from the sewers and in to your neighborhood when people use the toilet like a trash can. The only flushable items are toilet paper and your personal business. Do your part to keep "IT" where "IT" belongs. http://askhrgreen.org/what-not-to-flush/

This Saturday (10/26) from 10AM to 2PM is National Prescription Take Back Day! Wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove medications, so flushing them may unintentionally impact our local waterways. Instead, toss out any unneeded prescriptions at the following temporary locations:

• Walmart – 2021 Lynnhaven Parkway
• Kroger – 3901 Holland Road
• Walmart – 657 Phoenix Drive
• Wegmans – 4721 Virginia Beach Boulevard

Busy on National Prescription Take Back Day? Virginia Beach has permanent prescription take back receptacles at each of the 4 precinct lobbies that can be accessed 24 hours a day!

Our Water Taste Test was a hit with 127 total votes, thanks to everyone who participated today! The results are in and it was a very close call this year! Bottled water won by only 6 votes, and many people couldn’t tell the difference at all! While our results show that there is not a huge difference in taste, there is a HUGE difference between cost and trash impact, so DRINK TAP!

Option A was tap water and Option B was bottled water. Here’s how they scored:
Option A: 49 votes
Option B: 55 votes
No preference: 23 votes

09/08/2019

Can you tell the difference between bottled water and Virginia Beach tap water? Come test your skills at the Water Taste Test from 1PM-4PM! We’ll be at the oceanfront boardwalk by the Neptune statue!

Did our Atlantic Treatment Plant capture a mystery swamp monster?! Nope. No mystery here. THIS is a 'flushable' wipe monster. Unlike toilet paper, wipes don't dissolve. They can cause big problems at treatment plants and in household pipes. Please remember to throw used wipes into the trash, not the toilet. #whatnottoflush

Personal wipes, public problem.

Miami-Dade Water & Sewer Department can attribute up to $3.5 million in operating costs to the management of trash flushed down the toilet. Some pump stations need to be cleaned up 3x more often than 18 years ago.

Your internal plumbing, the public sewer system, and the wastewater treatment plant were not designed to handle so-called "flushable" wipes. Want to avoid messy and costly repairs to your own home or public infrastructure? Only flush human waste and toilet paper, and say "No Wipes in the Pipes!"

In a study published in March, researchers tested 23 single-use wipe products labeled “flushable” and found NONE of them fully disintegrate once flushed.

The researchers also tested 78 other single-use wipe products, including baby wipes, cleaning wipes and others. Out of all 101 products tested, only two of them even partially disintegrated.

NONE of them fully disintegrated.

Don't take water for granted! #ValueOfWater

What would happen if you turned the faucet on and… Nothing came out? No shower for you. Did you know that on average, one shower uses approximately 20 to 40 gallons of water? You also couldn’t flush the toilet as it typically needs 5 gallons of water to flush, and you couldn’t wash your clothes; washing machines use an average of 25 gallons per load.

Don’t take water for granted. To show your support, why not drink a nice clean glass of water?

What does water mean to you? Check out this video from our friends at askhrgreen.org to see what other residents of Hampton Roads are saying! #DWW

🚰 This week is Drinking Water Week… What does that mean? It gives us a chance to recognize the vital role water plays in our daily lives. Take this morning, for example: No water? No coffee! No water? No shower! No water? No ice for your smoothie!

In fact, The average American family uses more than 300 gallons of water at home daily, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Access to clean tap water and sanitation services is essential for all of us.

This week, raise a glass of water to… Water. 🥛
