On December 12, the Office of Volunteer Resources (OVR) began a new project called: "MK Volunteer with Me!" Each month, OVR staff member MK will step into the shoes of some of our City's finest volunteers and will shadow them in their volunteer roles and share their stories. Her first adventure took place at the Housing Resource Center (HRC). Sit back and enjoy Story #1 about Keon, an HRC Ambassador.

In his role as an Ambassador, Keon escorts guests and clients around the HRC. When asked why he volunteers, Keon said that he loved knowing he was helping and that he knew he was making an impact by making people smile. “It’s a cruel world out there” Keon said. “It doesn’t matter to me if you’re at the top or the bottom. What does matter to me is that you have a good day.”

In addition to his role as an Ambassador, Keon also serves on the Beach Governing Board, offers support to those experiencing homelessness as a Housing Buddy, and transitions the day support facility into an ADA complaint shelter daily.

As a resident of the HRC, Keon can connect with those in need in a special and unique way. Because Keon has walked in the shoes of those he is serving, people listen to him and his perspective. Those who interact with Keon walk away feeling seen and understood. Recently, upon learning that some people needing services were slipping through the cracks, he suggested creating a buddy system. He explained that the system can be tough to navigate and that often, staff changes and you may feel more like a number than a person. It helps to have someone who knows what you’re going through who can help you navigate the system. On November 22, Keon clocked in for his first shift as a housing buddy, providing extra support to those in need and seeing those who often feel overlooked.

As Keon humbly shared his story, his passion for those he serves was undeniable. Nearly everyone who walked past, he knew by name. Not only is he an Ambassador for the HRC, he is an ambassador for kindness, joy, and hope in an often-dark world. While his impact may be hard to quantify with numbers and dollar signs, it is not hard to identify when you see the smiles of those he interacts with.

In light of recent events at the housing resource center, what steps are being taken to ensure the safety of volunteers? I went to a few of your meetings before the center opened and my questions about safety were rebuffed. I also sent an email inquiring the same question, I was told that police would be making patrols through the area But there would be no permanent police presence. Has this changed?
Hello. Do you have any volunteer opportunities during the week or just weekends? I would love to do some volunteer work. How would I found opportunites that I could participant.
