Operating as usual

01/11/2022

Beginning January 11, 2022, the Norfolk Department of Public Health will be offering COVID-19 testing Saturdays – Thursdays, 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., by APPOINTMENT only. Testing will take place in a tent at the Military Circle Mall parking lot. The center will offer Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests—the most reliable form of testing for COVID-19.

Given the high demand for testing, the Community Testing Center will operate by appointments only and be open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday thru Thursday. The Norfolk Health Department will place staff on site to assist individuals with lack of access to internet or who may require further assistance with registration. The testing facility will be closed on Fridays. To find an appointment, visit vase.vdh.virginia.gov/testingappointment. Enter zip code 23502.

Test results will be automatically sent via text or email message to individuals being tested, based on the information provided in the appointment system. PCR test results are usually available within a few days and are very effective in detecting an active COVID-19 infection, even if asymptomatic. These CTCs are coordinated by the State VDH office and will be operating in addition to existing Community Testing Events which have been locally coordinated and administered through local health departments and community partners.

Thank you Nick for volunteering with the City of Virginia Beach to help animals in need!

Volunteer Spotlight:
My name is Nick Williams and I am a volunteer at the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center. I have been here a little over a year and volunteer in various areas of the center. I help in the Vet Suite, Cat colony and caged cat room and both small and large dog kennels. The reason I volunteer is because I love animals and my goal is to become a Veterinary Surgeon one day.

Thank you Alan for your dedication and service to VBCERT and VBMRC in addition to other organizations! You're a great example of how much volunteers can impact their community.

Congratulations to our VBMRC Star Volunteer of the Week, Alan Hagerman! ⭐️

Alan Hagerman is an Information Technology Specialist with a specialty in Cloud technology and data analysis. Joining us in March of this year, Alan is one of our star general support volunteers! Before joining our unit, he worked alongside the VBMRC as part of VBCERT at COVID-19 Testings and Flu clinics. Since joining VBMRC, Alan has primarily assisted with our smaller local outreach clinics at churches and in neighborhoods across Virginia Beach. You might have seen him in patient monitoring or mainly at the front of the clinic, registering patients. As mentioned, this is not Alan’s first experience with emergency situations. He has studied emergency preparedness and response in both Texas and Virginia Beach, as well as directly through FEMA. He is also a current VB PD Project Lifesaver officer with the VB PD Project Lifesaver and is involved with other volunteer organizations throughout the city.

Alan’s dedication, experience, and friendliness are only just a few reasons why he is an invaluable asset at our events and as a part of the non-medical side of our VBMRC unit. He brings a smile to all that are working with him and knows how to always efficiently perform his job while making it a fun experience for the volunteers and patients around him! Thanks to Alan, we have all the headgear and fun décor you see at our elementary school PODs. Thank you for all your service Alan! Our events would not be the same with you! #vbmrcstarvolunteeroftheweek

When asked what is his favorite part about the VBMRC, he stated:

“My favorite thing about the VBMRC is the sense of accomplishment working alongside other individuals improving the health of the communities we live in. As a volunteer with MRC, I have many opportunities to contribute from aid stations to testing and vaccine clinics. I’ve always worked alongside wonderful, friendly, and dedicated volunteers and VDH staff making the experiences personally rewarding.”

Thank you, VBMRC Volunteers for ALL that you do. We could not do what we do without all of you!

Earlier this month, our dedicated Faith Works Coalition volunteers constructed a wheelchair ramp for a disabled 56-year-old man. He was able to leave his home for the first time in years without calling the fire department to carry him down the stairs. Thanks to all of our amazing volunteers and donors for making this possible! If you’re interested in volunteering or donating, please visit us at www.faithworkscoalition.org. Thank you, and Happy New Year!

Although they have added a few terrific volunteers recently, the Senior Resource Center needs 40 active volunteers so no one has to cover more than one shift a month. A shift consists of being at the “duty” desk from either 9 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. or from 12:30 p.m.- 4 p.m. It is a simple, yet enjoyable job- greeting guests and answering the phone. If it’s a quiet day, the volunteer can read, knit, do a crossword puzzle, do a jigsaw or crossword puzzle, or surf the net on their phone. The ‘regulars” are covering multiple shifts, and they are getting tired! Call (757) 385-2175 or email: [email protected]

Yesterday, the 21st of December marks exactly one year since VA MRC supported COVID-19 vaccination efforts across the Commonwealth! To acknowledge and commemorate that important day, as well as all of the contributions from VA MRC volunteers since, Governor Ralph Northam has officially proclaimed December 21, 2021 as VA MRC day in Virginia! ⭐️

This proclamation recognizes the hours, of which there are over ¾ of a million, that VA MRC volunteers have collectively committed towards protecting the health of their fellow Virginians throughout the course of the COVID-19 pandemic response.

The initiative you have shown and the goodwill you have proffered as VA MRC volunteers has saved countless lives; donating your talent and effort to help your community during a time of great uncertainty is a noble pursuit that is absolutely worthy of official recognition from the Commonwealth’s highest authority. We are so proud of each of you and our team as a whole - thank you for being a part of this pivotal time in MRC history!

Mercy Chefs is deploying to Mayfield, KY in response to 250-mile quad-state tornado that devastated this town overnight. We plan to serve our first meals tomorrow evening to provide a moment of hope during this horrific time. This may be one of the most deadly and devastating tornadoes we've ever seen — just weeks before Christmas.
We will complete our holiday outreach for recovering flood victims in Waverly, TN this afternoon and relocate our team and equipment this evening to begin serving as many meals as possible as swiftly as possible.
Please pray for logistics to fall into place for our team as we travel, for the necessary grocery supplies to be readily available, and most of all for those affected, across four states, by this tornado. We are heartbroken seeing such devastation. We thank you for your support as we deploy to feed body and soul.

In light of recent events at the housing resource center, what steps are being taken to ensure the safety of volunteers? I went to a few of your meetings before the center opened and my questions about safety were rebuffed. I also sent an email inquiring the same question, I was told that police would be making patrols through the area But there would be no permanent police presence. Has this changed?
Hello. Do you have any volunteer opportunities during the week or just weekends? I would love to do some volunteer work. How would I found opportunites that I could participant.
