Governor Ralph Northam today announced that startup company Sunny Farms, LLC will invest $59.6 million to establish a state-of-the-art hydroponic greenhouse for production, workforce development, and research in the City of Virginia Beach. Sunny Farms will establish its growing, cleaning, and packaging operation in three phases over 36 months. The company will construct a 120,000-square-foot greenhouse (three acres under glass) with production focused on lettuce and other leafy greens in its first phase. Phase two will expand the facility to 640,000 square feet (16 acres), and phase three will complete the facility at 1.2 million square feet (32 acres) total with capacity for leafy greens and a variety of vegetables. VA Bio will Direct New “Virginia Bio-Connect” Statewide Consortium - Virginia Bio

Governor Northam and the Virginia Biotechnology Association announced that GO Virginia has approved a grant request to help fund Virginia Bio-Connect, a $3.2 million Statewide industry cluster initiative. The project is a multi-regional collaboration designed to increase connectivity and awareness of the existing programs, resources, and communities in the Commonwealth that support the life sciences industry. This effort leverages CvilleBioHub’s regional ecosystem building experience, funded in part by GO Virginia, to inform the further development of four additional BioHubs. City of Virginia Beach Economic Development and Eastern Virginia Medical School are the co-leading entities for our region. This a big win for Virginia Beach and Virginia’s Life Science community!
