Virginia Beach EMS leadership and Capt. Brian Roland want to recognize the outstanding care provided by Paramedic John Lara, Volunteer EMT Brooke Fick, and EMT Intern Thomas Tyree during a recent call.

On Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024, these dedicated providers were dispatched to assist a pediatric patient experiencing a life-threatening seizure. Alongside providers from E11, they responded quickly, arriving on the scene within minutes. The seamless communication and precise medical care they delivered were exemplary, Capt. Roland said.

Lara, as the attendant in charge, created a controlled and calm environment, ensuring that the complex medications required to stabilize the patient were administered effectively. His leadership, attention to detail, and unwavering commitment to patient care were critical to the successful outcome of this call.

Fick displayed exceptional composure, reassuring the patient’s family members that the situation was under control and that their loved one was receiving the highest level of care. Her ability to balance compassionate communication with professional focus was commendable.

Tyree also rose to the occasion, engaging in patient care with eagerness and professionalism. He demonstrated a strong desire to learn, stepping in wherever needed without hesitation and contributing meaningfully to the team effort.

Despite the high-stress nature of the call, each member of this team maintained their professionalism, ensured safety, and provided exceptional patient care. It is evident that each individual takes their training seriously — and when called upon — they exceeded all expectations.

Thank you to Paramedic John Lara, Volunteer EMT Brooke Fick, and EMT Intern Thomas Tyree for their outstanding medical practice and commitment to excellence in patient care in the Virginia Beach community!

◼️ Capt. Chris West
◼️ Teri Reeder
◼️ Nic Tamayo
◼️ Capt. Bob Donnelly
◼️ Karin Pettinger

VB Rescue EMS career and volunteer members surprised EMS Medical Director Dr. Stewart Martin on Tuesday to congratulate him on his retirement as an ER Physician at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Members cheered him on as he transitions into giving more time and service to the Department of EMS. He will continue to serve as Operational Medical Director for the department, a role he has held for more than 25 years.

EMS professionals, along with EMS certified providers in the Virginia Beach Fire Department, operate under the medical direction and licensure of Dr. Martin. He started his medical career as a volunteer with the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad in 1986. In 2008, he was appointed medical director for EMS. The Department of EMS completed its last strategic planning workshop on Thursday, July 25. The workshop is part of the department’s initiative to define future goals for the organization and create a final plan that will be the guiding principles for the years ahead. The process included three workshops that had equal representation from career and volunteer members.

During the last workshop, participants worked in breakout teams on different initiatives. A timed team-building exercise/ice breaker required members to build a tall, freestanding structure using only spaghetti, tape and a marshmallow as the pinnacle of the structure. Special guest, Leo, from Virginia Beach EMS Therapy Dogs stopped by to give attendees some pup kisses and tail wags!

Public safety agencies from the City of Virginia Beach, including VB EMS, joined Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Fire & Emergency Services at Naval Air Station Oceana on Tuesday to conduct a simulated aircraft mishap in preparation for the 2024 NAS Oceana Air Show. The training exercise provides an opportunity for local first responders to test and prepare when responding to a mass casualty incident, and actions that agencies should make to be ready should a real mass casualty incident occur.

The annual air show is on Sept. 21 and 22 and will feature the Navy’s flight demonstration team, the Blue Angels, along with a variety of military and civilian aviation performances.
