Email from City Media Communications: Santa-on-the-Air Emergency Medical Services
This morning (12/23/2020) EMS Division Chief Bruce Nedelka and Santa were interviewed by 13News Now Daybreak Reporter Anne Sparaco about the 2020 Santa-on-the-Air program. The program is running around-the-clock through noon on Christmas Day. First responders throughout the region can contact Santa and ask him to speak with children who may be a patient or bystander at an emergency. She was told that this is the 17th year for the program that was the brain-child an EMS volunteer who was on a serious call and children there were very upset and feared Santa would pass them by. That EMS volunteer realized he had to do something so children could better cope with situations like that around Christmas time. So, he developed the Santa-on-the-Air program.

Each year, that EMS Volunteer contacts Santa and with the cooperation of Virginia Beach IT and the dispatchers at ECCS, a special communications link is opened so Santa can talk via radio directly with frightened children at emergency scenes. Participation has grown over the years from just Virginia Beach EMS providers, and now also include: Virginia Beach Police and Fire Departments, Norfolk and Chesapeake Police Departments and Fire Departments, the Virginia State Police, Navy Regional Fire/Rescue and, new this year, Newport News Fire Department.

Over the years, the program has received awards and been written about in various publications praising the unique way that Virginia Beach EMS helps out during the Christmas season. This year the Santa-on-the-Air program is dedicated in memory of longtime EMS Chief Bruce W. Edwards, who passed away in August. The story aired today at noon and is online now.

On Tuesday, December 22nd, a story about Santa-on-the-Air was also featured on WTKR TV-3. Here’s the link to that story https://www.wtkr.com/news/aside-from-making-toys-santa-claus-comforts-children-in-emergency-situations

23 DEC 2014, 1330hrs

The ELFNET emergency flare sends Santa quickly to the radio and hailing 1524P, who is enroute to the hospital with a little boy named Jalen. Seems Jalen, in the excitement of a game of tug-of-war with his brother, accidentally took a tree branch to the face. 1524P reports a laceration to the boy’s right cheek, but more importantly, he’s worried about Christmas coming. Ol’ S.C. told the boy he was with a great ambulance crew, and after they help care for him, would he still try to feel better and have a great Christmas? “My cheek hurts,” was the first reply.
After Santa reassured him that the magic crystal snowball reveals that the scratch will probably heal pretty well, he then pulled out the Good Boys and Girls Book. Turning the page to the boy’s name, the toymaker confirmed that Jalen AND his brother AND his older sister are ALL on the good list this year. The smile on Jalen's face came clear through the radio. He said he really was feeling better and had worked hard to be on the list, especially in social studies, science and math. In fact, his letter to Santa included wishes for a science kit and a game. As the ambulance made landing at the hospital, the little guy promised to be good for the nurses. St. Nick wished Jalen, his family, and all on 1524P a very Merry Christmas!

23 DEC 2005, 1924hrs – 550 on unit 2120 called Santa via land line from VBGH. They had just transported a patient, and when they arrived at the hospital, they found a little boy, about age 8, was in one of the ER’s beds. They didn’t know him, but they knew he was scared and needed a call from Santa. Upon learning that the boy’s name is Jaylyn, Santa asked the crew to hang up the phone, turn their portable to channel C-1, and go stand close to the child’s bedside. Thirty seconds later, Santa hailed 2120 over the air, asking if they were near to a little boy named Jaylyn. 2120 replied, “Hello Santa. Yes, we just happen to be with him right now.” Upon asking to speak to him, a young voice replied, “Hello Santa!” Santa stated he knew Jaylyn had doubts about Christmas, but St. Nick assured him that somehow he would make sure Christmas found him, even if it was in the hospital. “Thank you Santa!” came the robust reply. The jolly old elf reminded Jaylyn that the hospital staff and the rescue squad crew with him are Santa’s friends, and they would take good care of him. How was he feeling? 2120 replied that the boy was a little confused as to how Santa knew he was there, but Jaylyn thanked the crew for letting him talk on the radio, and thanked Santa for calling him. To Jaylyn and all the good people taking care of the lad, Santa wished a very Merry Christmas.

Santa wanted to share some previous calls he received!

24 DEC 2005, 2010hrs
“North Pole One from 1775,” crackled over the portable, as Santa took a quick sip of hot cider.

“North Pole One, Santa here. Good Evening!”

“Good evening Santa. Just wondering what is your destination is tonight?”

A bemused Santa replied, “Why, to the homes of all good little boys and girls.” One second later, over the radio, Santa heard that unmistakable, wonderful sound of children cheering loudly.

“Thank you Santa! Everyone here will soon be off to bed.”

Santa wished everyone a Merry Christmas, and a very good night.
