The Advanced Technology Center (ATC) is the result of a partnership between Tidewater Community College, Virginia Beach City Public Schools and the City of Virginia Beach. This facility is unique among educational institutions as it offers secondary and post secondary students the highly technical training of today's workforce.

ATC student, Tre Turner and instructor, Linda Lavender had an opportunity, recently, to visit and network at the AFCEA Cyber Conference with professors and students from Old Dominion University. Tre will be majoring in cybersecurity at ODU in the fall.

Today, we complete our May recognitions of ATC (s) nominated by students and parents at the ATC.
Jason Baker, provides expert instruction to our 1st year Engineering Technology students at the Advanced Technology Center. A graduate of Old Dominion University, Jason has deservedly been recognized as the ATC's 2015 and 2025 Teacher of the Year. In addition to his efforts with students at the ATC, Mr. Baker serves as an instructor for ASM International. ASM International is the world’s largest association of materials-centric engineers and scientists. When asked "Why do you consider this person a ?"; one of his students parents responded, "Mr. Baker has always been an advocate for students and understands each individual and their potential, with much patience. He exemplifies the qualities of an experienced teacher. He knows his curriculum and how to tap into each individual student."
Thank you, Mr. Baker for all that you do to make the Advanced Technology Center such a unique learning environment for the students of Virginia Beach!
Although our recognitions come to an end with the end of the month, please know that the Advanced Technology Center is full of "HEROS" who positively impact the lives of it's students each and every day. Austin Whitehorne is the ATC's Cyber Security Systems Technology instructor. Holding a Bachelor Degree in Business Management from Virginia Tech, Mr. Whitehorne has over a decade of experience in teaching courses related to business and information technology. When asked, "Why do you consider this person a ?"; one of his students parents responded, "Mr. Whitehorne goes above and beyond to help students achieve success. He is a positive mentor offering advice, wisdom and encouragement to his students."

Kudos to students in our newly established Renewable Energy Technologies I class! Team Lil Turbies (Quinay, Elena, Alvin and Nicolas) won second place in the HS Maker Expo category and team Wind Wizards (Zeller, Lilly and Carlos) won third place in the HS Maker Expo category for Designing An Offshore Wind Turbine Foundation. Congratulations to 11th grade ATC Advanced Engineering Practicum student, Chase Bonfiglio, who won first-place in the TSA CAD Engineering competition. His success has also secured him an internship opportunity through TSA partner CollegeRamp. VBSchools

Jim Spruill is one of the ATC's own; a 2005 Kellam and Advanced Technology Center graduate, and 2020 ATC Teacher of the Year, Mr. Spruill serves as the ATC's Cisco Network Engineering instructor. When asked, "Why do you consider this person a ?"; one of his students responded, "He really engages with our class, and he actually teaches more than just the curriculum. He allows more opportunities for certifications and other projects, and really shows that he cares about our class and the students."

Michael Weber, is our Software & Game Development instructor and 2017 ATC Teacher of the Year honoree. Additionally, Mr. Weber also serves as coach of our highly successful Esports team. When asked, "Why do you consider this person a ?"; one of his students parents responded, "Great example to the students and promotes learning outside of the classroom. Our child would not be as successful in high school had it not been for Mr. Weber. "

Throughout the month of May we will celebrate our amazing teachers. Today, we would like to recognize our first two ATC nominees.
Our 1st nominee is Mrs. Linda Lavender. Our Network Administration & Cyber Defense instructor and ATC Teacher of the Year honoree in 2007, 2013, 2019, and 2024, Mrs. Lavender also serves as our Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) sponsor. When asked, "Why do you consider this person a ?"; one of her students responded, "She is smart, knowledgeable, and ever curious. She always has time to answer my questions and is an easy person to talk to."
Mr. Mack Stevens is our 2nd honoree. Mr. Stevens teaches Modeling & Simulation, and Game Character Design at the ATC. The ATC's 2018 Teacher of the Year and one of our Technology Students Association (TSA) sponsors, Mack was nominated by one of his student's parents who stated, "Mr. Stevens is a caring and compassionate teacher. He is patient with the students and explains the information to the students. Mr. Steven’s is there when parents have a question. He is very polite and always there to help."

Thirty-one competitors from ATC attended the TSA Regional Competition. Students scored in the top 3 in nine competitions this past Saturday.

Two students from Advanced Technology Center’s (ATC) Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering course in Virginia Beach, who submitted essays on what their Navy means to them, won the first-ever Naval Air Force Atlantic (AIRLANT) essay contest. The students were provided an opportunity to join AIRLANT’s Force Master Chief Jimmy W. Hailey III for the day on Jan. 22, to learn more about naval aviation.

CoderZ Competition 2023

Joseph Palmer, Wesley Chu, Jaden Kubin, Jaydalynn Ranieri-Davis, Laray Northern, Sergei Dorofeev competed in the 2023 CoderZ Python competition and took 3rd place in North America.
This is a worldwide competition, to move on to the next level you need to take 1st place.
This is quite an accomplishment for the students who met for the first time in late August and started learning Python programming in October.
Web Design Students Keep a Holiday Tradition Going.
Each year, the students volunteer to build bikes, purchased by web design teacher, Kathy Sargent. These two bikes are now on their way to some well-deserving kids via the Toys for Tots drive.
