As Women's History Month comes to a close, we'd like to celebrate one of our own extraordinary female Soldiers and our newest U.S. Army Bands' senior enlisted leader, Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Terrina Anderson.
CSM Anderson is making history by assuming responsibility on March 10th (during Women's History Month!) as the first female Command Sergeant Major of the U.S. Army School of Music.
CSM Anderson grew up in Texas and holds degrees from Saint Olaf College, the University of Michigan, and the University of North Texas. Her career as an Army clarinet player began in 2001 and has taken her to #usarmybands in Arizona, Korea, Georgia, North Carolina, Kansas, and Virginia, with deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve. She has also served as a writer/instructor at #USASOM and as an operations Sergeant Major for the Asymmetric Warfare Group.

For the second year in a row, #USASOM bandmasters travelled to Arlington National Cemetery to honor a fellow bandmaster - Lieutenant James Reese Europe.
USASOM Executive Officer 1st Lt. Jac'kel Smalls served as the guest speaker for a graveside wreath laying ceremony commemorating the life and legacy of Lt. Europe.
Known for his leadership of the 369th Regimental Band, the "Harlem Hellfighters", Lt. Europe was a remarkable Soldier and musician. He is credited as being the "Martin Luther King Jr. of music" for his contributions to the development of jazz as well as setting the stage for African American musicians to perform in the early 20th century.

Though Spc. Benjamin Blodgett has only worn the uniform for 6 months, the U.S. Army has influenced his entire life.
Spc. Blodgett, an Advanced Individual Training (AIT) euphonium player from Utah, grew up watching his mom, 1st Sgt. Lisa Blodgett, serve her country.
In 1993, she joined the 23rd Army Band as a trombone player. Now, after 29 years of service, 1st Sgt. Blodgett will welcome the 23rd's newest Soldier, Spc. Benjamin Blodgett!
"I’ve always had the opportunity to watch the 23rd Army Band ever since I was a little boy. I enjoyed the music and thought that it was so cool to see my mom performing in it. As I grew up, I started to realize that it was something I could be a part of too, and the thought of serving alongside my mom was amazing. It’s all thanks to her example and service in the Army that I’m now standing here alongside her." - Spc. Blodgett

This Black History Month we celebrate the legacy of the 404th Armed Service Forces Women's Army Corps (WAC) Band - the only all-black female band in U.S. military history.
During World War II, the women of the 404th battled societal and racial stigma to perform at high schools, parades, and concerts for churches, hospitals and community organizations.
“They made us feel like celebrities,” wrote Clementine Skinner, a trumpet and horn player. “Many of the young girls sought our autographs as if we were famous.” She said the “soul-moving” experience of playing with the band “had us more determined to make people see us.”

“People like [Lt. Col.] Marcella Hayes inspires and motivates me to keep going because they make me realize the sky is the limit,” said Cpl. Kayla Noyles.
“Being able to exceed the standard and reach all my goals as an Army aviator shows the next little girl or boy of color that despite the obstacles we may face in any profession, they are just as capable as I am, if not more.”
Hayes became the first black female to receive aviator wings in the U.S. Armed Forces in November 1979 when she completed Army helicopter flight training at the U.S. Army Aviation Center, Fort Rucker, Ala.

Once he completes AIT, Spc. King is headed to Colorado to serve with the 4th Infantry Division Band.
Congratulations, Spc. King!

The highest score came from Specialist Brock Cotton, a euphonium player with the 312th Army Band!
SPC Cotton is a graduate of the Broken Arrow Bands and will attend Oklahoma State University this fall as a music major, while serving his community as a member of the #usarmybands.
Well done, SPC Cotton!

100 Years of The United States Army Band "Pershing's Own"
Today marks 100 years of The United States Army Band "Pershing's Own"!
On this day in 1922, the first thirty-three members of The Army Band reported to Fort Hunt, Virginia. That evening, the first Morning Report was filed, marking the official beginning of The Army Band.
Thank you, The United States Army Band, for 100 years of service to this nation!

Soldiers honored for helping technician at McMahon Memorial Auditorium
Staff Sergeant Kenneth Goss, Sergeant Karsten Burns, and Corporal Nicole Mouzon from the 77th ARMY BAND sprang to action last month when a piece of heavy stage equipment fell and pinned a contractor underneath.
The Soldiers were able to lift the equipment, freeing the contractor and preventing serious injury.
We applaud their commitment to living the #ArmyValues! Well done!

Each year, the Armed Services YMCA Hampton Roads recognizes active-duty service members and their families who best represent service to their country and commitment to their local community through a spirit of volunteerism.
One of this year’s Five Star Families - our very own Sgt. 1st Class Karen Oliver and her wife Andrea Muffly for their work in the Fort Story Community Garden!
From the Armed Services YMCA:
SFC Karen "Kirby" Oliver and spouse, Andrea, have been working in the Fort Story Community Garden since its re-opening in September 2020. Andrea initiated the project and acts as the Civilian Liaison for the garden. As the lead organizer, she manages all garden operations, navigates legal considerations, leads fundraising events, and coordinates weekly workdays. She also manages the weekly emails and built the garden website. Kirby designed and built the no-waste compost system, manages the organic community vegetable garden, and installed the Little Free Library and the Share Box in the garden, which Andrea successfully wrote a grant to the Little Free Libraries and received an Impact Library Package. The Oliver family have amassed a combined 450 volunteer hours working in the garden this year. They love being involved in the Fort Story Community Garden and are excited about how far it has come this year and hope it continues to grow.
Congratulations!

It's a dreary winter day in Virginia Beach, so for #ThrowbackThursday let's reminisce about warmer times - the 2nd Annual Black vs. Gold Football Game.
Complete with a student pep band and a stadium of #USASOM spectators, this annual teambuilding event pitted students and staff against each other for the coveted "Collins vs. Collins" Trophy.
The winner of the 2015 game? The team of current USASOM Quality Assurance Evaluator and then Platoon Sergeant, Master Sgt. Larry Collins!

Army organizations rely on effective teams to complete tasks, achieve objectives, and accomplish missions. Teambuilding activities like football can help strengthen the bond of our #ArmyTeam.
