Franklin Southampton Economic Development, Inc. STARTUP program helped entrepreneurs start businesses through business education, which included developing a plan and pitching it in a competition with prize money awarded for the top plans.
2021 CEDA Award Winner: Blue Ridge Community College
Blue Ridge Community College was recognized for its advanced manufacturing training program in response to the Shenandoah Valley’s struggle to recruit and retain employees. It brought together economic development, education, workforce and industry to solve a challenge.
2021 CEDA Award Winner: Roanoke County
Roanoke County’s Reimagine 419 leveraged public-private partnerships to develop a town center in the heart of Roanoke’s commercial corridor. The 390-acre area, visible from Interstate 581 and close to the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, was ripe for growth.

The Virginia Economic Developers Association was pleased to announce in March 2021 it had selected its 2021 Community Economic Development Awards (CEDA) recipients, recognizing James City County and the City of Williamsburg for their efforts in advancing economic vitality during the COVID-19 pandemic. VEDA recognized Surry County with an honorable mention award for the expansion of broadband internet for residents and businesses in the community.
