🚒 MINI FIRE EXPO – SEPTEMBER 19! 🚑

Mecklenburg County Emergency Services is excited to help spread the word about the Mini Fire Expo, coming to the Exchange Warehouse on Saturday, September 19th from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

This is not just an event for first responders. There will be plenty to see and learn for everyone in our community!

Numerous fire apparatus and emergency equipment vendors will be on site displaying equipment, vehicles, and technology used in today’s emergency services. Firefighters, EMS providers, and law enforcement personnel will have an opportunity to see equipment firsthand, talk with vendors, and learn about new resources available to the public safety community.

For the public, this is a great opportunity to bring the family out, explore emergency vehicles and equipment, meet your local first responders, and learn more about the agencies and organizations serving Mecklenburg County.

You’ll also find local businesses, community organizations, tourism information, and representatives from Mecklenburg County and our local towns.

Mecklenburg Emergency Services is currently planning for our next free EMT Course set to begin January 2027.

An informational session will be offered October 4th. Morning and afternoon sessions available. Join us to learn more about the program and the pre course requirements. Spots are limited. Directions on how to register for the course will be given at the informational session and selected students will be notified by the end of October.

Mecklenburg County Emergency Services Whole Blood Program Officially Takes Off!

This morning, our team traveled to the Virginia State Police / Chesterfield Fire & EMS MedFlight 1 base in Chesterfield County to receive our first two units of whole blood, marking the official launch of one of the most significant advancements in emergency medical care ever introduced in Mecklenburg County.

Beginning today, our paramedics are equipped to administer whole blood to patients suffering from life threatening blood loss before they ever reach the hospital. For critically injured trauma patients, every minute matters. Being able to begin replacing lost blood at the scene or while en route to the hospital can dramatically improve a patient’s chances of survival.

This milestone represents months of planning, training, equipment acquisition, and collaboration between numerous organizations that share a common goal: providing the highest level of care possible to the citizens and visitors of Mecklenburg County.

Programs like this simply do not happen alone. We are incredibly grateful for the guidance, support, and partnership provided by Chesterfield Fire and EMS, the Virginia State Police MedFlight 1 team, the Old Dominion EMS Alliance (ODEMSA), Inova Blood Donor Services, our medical direction team, and all of the individuals who helped make this vision a reality.

Their willingness to share their knowledge, experience, and resources has allowed Mecklenburg County to bring this lifesaving capability to our community.

We are especially proud to be part of this regional effort that is expanding access to prehospital blood transfusions across Virginia. Working together, agencies throughout the region are ensuring that patients have access to the best possible care when they need it most.

Today, two units of blood were placed into service. We sincerely hope they never have to be used. But if the day comes when someone’s life depends on them, our crews are now ready.

Thank you to everyone who helped us reach this milestone. Together, we are continuing to raise the standard of emergency medical care in Mecklenburg County.

🚍 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY – KNOW WHEN TO STOP FOR A SCHOOL BUS

As students return to school, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office reminds motorists to know Virginia's school bus stopping law.

⚠️ If the roadway has only a center turn lane (like the one shown below), ALL traffic in both directions MUST STOP when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended.

A center turn lane does not exempt oncoming traffic from stopping.

You are only exempt from stopping if the roadway is divided by:
✅ A physical barrier, or
✅ An unpaved median or other divided median separating opposing traffic.

Every time a school bus stops, children may be crossing the roadway. Slow down, stay alert, and obey the law—it could save a child's life.

Protect our children. Stop when the bus stops.

We have received several calls today regarding the smoky and hazy conditions across Mecklenburg County.

The haze you are seeing is not the result of a local fire or emergency in our area. It is smoke that has drifted into Virginia from the ongoing wildfires in Canada and is expected to persist throughout the day.

While the smoke may create reduced visibility and a noticeable odor outdoors, there are currently no known local fire incidents causing these conditions.

Residents who are sensitive to smoke, including those with asthma, COPD, or other respiratory conditions, may want to limit prolonged outdoor activity until conditions improve.

As always, if you see flames, a large column of smoke coming from a specific location, or have an emergency, please call 911.

Mecklenburg County Emergency Services will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates if needed.

Today marked another big step toward the launch of Mecklenburg County Emergency Services’ Prehospital Whole Blood Program as our providers completed whole blood administration training ahead of our planned go live date during the first week of August.

A huge thank you goes out to Lieutenant Greg Jones and Firefighter/Flight Paramedic Russell Horne from Chesterfield Fire and EMS for spending the day with our staff and sharing their experience and knowledge from one of Virginia’s most established prehospital whole blood programs.

Greg and Russell have been tremendous resources throughout this process, and their willingness to answer questions, share lessons learned, and help guide us through implementation has played a major role in getting us ready for launch.

Programs like this don’t happen without strong partnerships. We are grateful for the support and collaboration of Chesterfield Fire and EMS, Virginia State Police Med Flight 1, ODEMSA Region 6, Inova Blood Donor Services, and our medical direction team as we work to bring this capability to Mecklenburg County.

We are proud to be part of this regional effort and look forward to officially bringing this program online in the coming weeks.

Congratulations to our friends at Dinwiddie County Fire & EMS on the launch of their Prehospital Whole Blood Program.

It’s exciting to see this lifesaving capability continue to expand to communities across the Commonwealth. Programs like this represent another step forward in bringing advanced, evidence based care directly to patients when minutes matter most.

We look forward to joining them as Mecklenburg County Emergency Services prepares to launch our program in August. Together, these efforts are helping ensure that more Virginians have access to the highest level of prehospital care, no matter where they live.

Dinwiddie County Fire & EMS Launches Prehospital Whole Blood Administration Program

DINWIDDIE, VA – Dinwiddie County Fire & EMS is proud to announce the launch of its Prehospital Whole Blood Administration Program, a major advancement in emergency medical care that will allow critically injured patients to receive life-saving blood transfusions before arriving at the hospital.

The ability to administer whole blood in the field enables EMS providers to begin definitive treatment for patients experiencing life-threatening blood loss at the earliest possible moment. By delivering this critical intervention on scene and during transport, Dinwiddie County Fire & EMS can improve patient outcomes, reduce preventable deaths, and provide care that reflects the latest evidence-based trauma practices.

“The implementation of our Prehospital Whole Blood Program is a tremendous step forward in the level of emergency care available in Dinwiddie County,” said W. Kevin Massengill, County Administrator. “This investment equips our Fire & EMS professionals with another lifesaving tool and reflects our steadfast commitment to providing the highest quality service when our citizens need it most.”

The program is the result of extensive planning, specialized training, and strong collaboration among Fire & EMS personnel, medical directors, hospital partners, and regional public safety agencies. Dinwiddie extends its sincere appreciation to Chesterfield Fire & EMS, Virginia State Police Med-Flight 1, and INOVA Blood Donor Services for their guidance, mentorship, and partnership in helping bring this lifesaving capability to the community.

Effective immediately, the Mecklenburg County, Virginia burn ban has been lifted.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation over the last several weeks while conditions remained extremely dry and hazardous.

Even though the burn ban has been lifted, conditions can still change quickly and outdoor burning should always be done safely and responsibly. Before burning, clear the area around the fire to help prevent it from spreading. In accordance with Virginia law, any fire located within 150 feet of dry grass, brush, woods, or other combustible material must be constantly attended by a competent person with adequate fire suppression equipment readily available. Fires should never be left unattended and must be completely extinguished before leaving the area.

Please remember that anyone responsible for starting a wildfire can be held liable for suppression costs and damages.

As always, use common sense, monitor weather conditions, and avoid burning on windy days.
