The Virginia Beach Library Foundation is a certified 501c3 public nonprofit that provides a protected vehicle for giving donations to the library system. Donations are used to fund special projects, materials, and programs benefiting the community that the library could not otherwise afford through its annual city operating budget. FAQ’s Is the foundation necessary when the library is funded with taxpayer dollars? While the city has been and is most supportive, public funding is not sufficient to enable the library to keep pace with the needs and demands of a 21st century library. Last fall we purchased the Edgar T. Brown Collection for Virginia Beach Public Library's Local History and Genealogy archives. This fall we are happy to report that the collection has been cataloged and is available to view in two ways. The physical materials are available to view by appointment at the Central Library, but you can also access nearly 2,000 images from the Brown Collection in VBPL's digital archive. The collection includes postcards, advertisements and other photos that chronicle the history of Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach.

We received a mini-grant of $2,000 on behalf of Virginia Beach Public Library from the American Library Association's Library Census Equity Fund to raise awareness self-responding to the 2020 U. S. Census. Combined with additional funds from VBPL and in partnership with Virginia Wesleyan University, the grant supported a direct mail campaign targeted to two census tracts in the Western Bayside area that saw low response rates in the 2010 U. S. Census. More than 6,100 postcards were sent to residents in the two tracts to help inform them about the importance of completing the U. S. Census, the privacy of reported information, and that VBPL offers free access to computers and Internet as an option for responding online.

There is just one week left to make your voice heard and help us get Virginia Beach to 100%! My2020Census.gov

Early literacy education is extremely important to childhood development, which is why Virginia Beach Public Library offers virtual storytime programs for all preschool ages. But did you know that we have a endowment specifically set up to provide additional support for VBPL's early literacy education programs?

The Sadler Early Literacy Endowment is the legacy of Joe and Virginia Sadler, who were enthusiastic VBPL supporters. Their gift provides funding for programs that teach young kids the pre-literacy skills that they need to become accomplished readers. You can learn more about the Sadlers, their lasting impact on our community, and how you can contribute to VBPL's early literacy programming by clicking here: https://www.vblibraryfoundation.org/sadler-endowment/

🧠Cool fact: The greatest amount of brain growth occurs between birth and age five! Reading to the youngest of children is super important, plus it's fun and puts a smile on everyone's face. 😁
