Have name suggestions for our festive friends in the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts? Share them in the comments, below, or, if you are attending one of Ballet Virginia's performances of "The Nutcracker," drop them in the suggestion box! #vbarts 🎁

In celebration of National Ugly Sweater Day tomorrow, we roped in our toy soldiers for a photoshoot! But we soon realized, we didn't know what to call them. (They've been showing up in our lobby for YEARS... it's getting embarrassing that we don't know their names.) 😬 Leave your name suggestions in the comments below, OR, if you're in the building for Ballet Virginia's The Nutcracker this weekend, drop your suggestions in the box in the lobby! #happyholidays #boatymcboatface

Calling all teens! You, or your school’s poetry club, can now register to participate in ImmortALL, a historic teen poetry project!

Teens, teachers, and poetry clubs can register to participate in the program, and view the full workshop schedule, here: https://www.museumsvb.org/_assets/ImmortALL-Program-Registration-Packet-Final.pdf.

Teens With a Purpose (TWP), a local youth empowerment organization internationally recognized for their poets and poetry workshops, is partnering with the Virginia Beach History Museums and Princess Anne County Training School/Union Kempsville High School Alumni and Friends Association (PACTS/UKHS) for a second year of the project. The partnership invites Hampton Roads teens to learn about local African American history while discovering the lively art of performance poetry!

In ImmortALL, performance poetry and social change meet oral history, including from those who lived through the civil rights movement, in this unique program. Area teens (from age 13-19) will connect with alumni from PACTS/UKHS, as well as professional poets from TWP. In regular sessions from October 2021 through April 2022, teens will engage in TWP’s signature virtual performance poetry workshops, meet PACTS/UKHS alumni from the classes of 1943-1969 , learn more about the Virginia Beach History Museums’ Princess Anne County Training School/Union Kempsville High School Museum and, conditions permitting, have an opportunity to meet and rehearse at the museum. ImmortALL teens will display their re-interpretations of local oral history, through the lens of their own experiences with current events, in a final public performance in April 2022.

“Teens With a Purpose celebrates the African tradition of storytelling through performance poetry during ImmortALL poetry workshops for teens and The Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate Program,” said Deirdre Love, Executive Director of Teens With a Purpose. “The ImmortALL journey allows young people to hear the stories, told by the living legends, those who attended the first high school in Virginia Beach for African Americans. Young people take inspiration from the workshops and interviews to create meaningful response poems - making them immortal.”

Teens participating in the program will have the opportunity to work towards a goal of immortalizing the ideals and history of the community that built PACTS/UKHS, while sounding the call for further understanding, equity, and social change.

TWP workshops are supported in part by funding from the Virginia Beach Arts & Humanities Commission.

Highway marker in Virginia Beach to commemorate Filipino sailors

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) recently approved a new historical highway marker in Virginia Beach, which will honor Filipinos who've served in the U.S. Navy.

From DHR's website: "A forthcoming Virginia Beach marker “Filipinos in the U.S. Navy” explains that Filipinos served in the Navy as early as the Civil War but they enlisted in greater numbers when the U.S. took possession of the Philippines after the Spanish-American War. Following World War II, when the Philippines gained independence in 1946, the U.S. Navy began recruiting Filipinos, resulting in about 35,000 Filipinos serving in the Navy during the next four decades. Hampton Roads emerged as one of the nation’s largest Filipino communities in proximity to a naval base."

The marker will be placed near the Philippine Cultural Center of Virginia.

The state highway marker is meant to remember and honor contributions of Filipinos in the U.S. Navy.

To Those Who Serve

This beautiful musical performance by Symphonicity is dedicated to the Princess Anne County Training School/Union Kempsville High School Alumni Veterans and all our Veterans, some who are still active in the reserves. We are grateful for your service, and, because of it, we have the freedom to create, perform, and enjoy inspiring works of art like this. “To Those Who Serve” was composed by renowned Virginia Beach Composer, Adolphus Hailstork. Dr. Hailstork is renowned for combining African-American and European musical ideas in his classical compositions. #VeteransDay 🇺🇸 🎶

Happy #VeteransDay! Thank you to all who've served in our nation's military, protected our country and fought for our freedom. 🇺🇸

The Tidewater Veterans Memorial, located directly across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center, is a striking tribute to the heroic veterans of war and the brave military personnel who strive to maintain world peace and harmony.

Born of the vision of Bill Hallead, this extraordinary task was undertaken by a group of military veterans and community leaders who conceived the idea of organizing a contest amongst school students to form the idea upon which this memorial would be built. Their themes were given form by a team of leading artists, sculptors and architects who toiled to create this memorial. The memorial is designed to signify the manner in which the world is torn apart by war. The spherical shapes have cut-out centers to denote the emptiness that war leaves in its wake. The waterfall represents the turmoil that war causes while its motion stands for the pursuit to bring people together.

A timeless tribute to the heroism of those who have braved the horrors of war so that their countrymen might live in freedom and democracy, the Tidewater Veterans Memorial is a must visit for any visitor to Virginia Beach.

Local students Edward Davis, Audrea Powell, and Martha Ellen Clark contributed to the concept.
