Virginia Beach Arts and the Cultural Affairs Department support programs and services that build our community and transform lives by enhancing enjoyment, understanding and participation in the arts. A non-profit organization called Public Art Virginia Beach Foundation was formed in 2012 to raise money to bring more public art to Virginia Beach. The organization's first project was to commission "The Wave" by Jeff Laramore for the Laskin Gateway. More information about the Public Art Virginia Beach Foundation and how to donate to this important initiative can be found at www.vbpublicart.org.

Portraits from a Place of Grace, an immersive public art installation by Richard Hollant, celebrates Virginia Beach’s historic African American neighborhoods and their residents. Through a network of community leaders, Hollant and Virginia African American Cultural Center leaders reached out to the historic African American neighborhoods in Virginia Beach to identify a broad range of residents who would contribute to the visual tapestry and oral history depicting the Black experience in the city.

One of the featured residents is Harry L. Kirkley, President of the Newsome Farm Civic League. He shares his story in the video, below.

The President and the Art of the Oil Painting

Happy #PresidentsDay! Did you know Dwight Eisenhower, the 34th U.S. President, created hundreds of paintings? Despite having no formal arts training, President Eisenhower used painting to relax and focus, and even had his work exhibited in the Huntington Hartford Museum in New York in 1967.

For a man forged in the noise and anger of warfare, Eisenhower painted as if he had spent his whole life yearning for tranquillity.

Bernadette Peters Loves Dogs More Than You Do, I’m Sorry I Don’t Make The Rules

Bernadette Peters may be a decades long star of stage and screen, but her work and passions extend far beyond the bright lights of Broadway.

Peters also devotes her time to her pet project, Broadway Barks, which is an annual star-studded dog and cat adoption event that benefits shelter animals in New York City.

In the spirit of her work with animals, the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts has partnered with the Virginia Beach SPCA for a purrr-fect opportunity! Bring a donation for the VBSPCA to the Box Office and receive $10 off price level 2 tickets to Bernadette Peters on Thursday, February 20 at 7:30 PM. A full list of approved donations is located here: https://vbspca.com/wish-list/

Saddle up, partner! Get ready for a rarely explored journey through American history with Cross That River at The Zeiders American Dream Theater tomorrow, February 8 at 7:30PM.

The story tells the tale of Blue, a run-away slave, who escapes from slavery to Texas to become one of America’s first Black Cowboys in the 1860s American West. This compelling tale of freedom integrates fiction with historical fact, and each song presents a different page in this complicated chapter of American History.

This event is presented by the Virginia African American Cultural Center and The Zeiders American Dream Theater.

This windy Friday gave us a great opportunity to see Wings in flight outside the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts!

In 2011, the Sandler Center added a striking addition to its Outdoor Plaza with Wings, a kinetic sculpture designed by renowned New Orleans artist Lin Emery.

Funding for the sculpture was generously donated by Tom and Juanita Felton, lifelong art advocates. For more information on the artist, Lin Emery, please visit https://linemery.com. To explore our profile of public art, visit https://www.vbpublicart.org.
