Virginia Beach Arts and the Cultural Affairs Department support programs and services that build our community and transform lives by enhancing enjoyment, understanding and participation in the arts. A non-profit organization called Public Art Virginia Beach Foundation was formed in 2012 to raise money to bring more public art to Virginia Beach. The organization's first project was to commission "The Wave" by Jeff Laramore for the Laskin Gateway. More information about the Public Art Virginia Beach Foundation and how to donate to this important initiative can be found at www.vbpublicart.org.

VAACC partners with Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors
Bureau to publish the 1st Self-Guided Tour of AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY in Virginia Beach!

It started more than two years ago when the Virginia African American Cultural Center (VAACC), Founder and Chairman Dr. Amelia Ross-Hammond approached the
Directors of the Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) with the proposition of creating an African American brochure for our tourists and locals.

“This is a 1st for the City of Virginia Beach and an excellent step towards celebrating Virginia’s Beach’s historic landmarks which showcase African Americans craftmanship at 1st Landing State Park,
to historic Seatack community’s pioneering achievements,” said Ross-Hammond.

This community was registered in the Congressional record in 2013, as the oldest African American community in the United States. It is also the birthplace of world-renowned artist, writer and producer, Pharrell Williams.

“We are honored that Dr. Ross-Hammond invited us to be a part of this important project which elevates places and stories that are a significant piece of Virginia Beach’s history. We look forward to a continued partnership with Dr. Ross-Hammond, and the
Virginia African American Cultural Center,” CVB Intermin Director Nancy Helman said.

This beautifully designed brochure (the first part of which is displayed here) will be shared at Welcome Centers across the Commonwealth. I would like to express my appreciation to CVB, its directors and staff, as well as the late Sean Brickell for his commitment to this project.

Special thanks to Edna Hawkins Hendrix, author, local historian & member of VAACC’s Oral History subcommittee, Mark Reed, Director of the Historical Preservation Commission & our Board of Directors for their contributions.

We strive to inform and educate the public about African Americans' contributions in all areas of endeavor. #VAACCVB #VBCVB #AfricanAmericanHistory

Here's a wonderful photo of a Symphonicity string quintet featuring Irene Ilchyshyn, Verleyne Andrews- Rodgers, Danielle Fagan, Jessica Tuttobene and Becky Brown. They performed this past weekend for residents of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Virginia Beach who could safely enjoy the music through the open windows. We play for love of music but for our love of others, too. 🎻 💥 ❤️

The Virginia Beach Cultural Affairs Department is seeking artists for three (3) upcoming public art projects!

Project 3 of 3: Call to Teaching Artists: Neighborhood Utility Boxes

Inspired by similar projects around the country and expanding on the success of the Utility Art Wrapped Boxes in the ViBe Creative District, Cultural Affairs is looking to take this program around the City of Virginia Beach. The art wrapped utility boxes will provide selected neighborhoods a sense of identity and serve to activate the selected areas supporting walkable neighborhoods connected by community inspired art.

In partnership with the Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Visual Arts Department, a local artist will closely work with students to create original artwork based on common themes such as: Community Dreams, This is Me!, How My City Moves, etc. The theme will be decided by the collaboration between the artist and the selected schools.

Visit https://www.vbpublicart.org/blog?category=Artists%20Opportunities to learn more and download the application. Submissions are due no later than 5 p.m. on May 7, 2021. #vbarts #vbpublicart
