Summer’s here, and the fountain is flowing in Town Center! 💦
Atop the fountain you’ll notice the “Trio of Herons.” The Trio of Herons Fountain located at the Town Center Fountain Plaza was created by artist David Turner in 2007. Three bronze herons support each other back to back atop a water feature.

"Prismatic Play" by Aimee Bruce
#ThrowbackThursday before you head down to the Rudee Loop at 4 p.m. this afternoon for our next Public Art Walk, check out this video from the installation of "Prismatic Play," by Aimee Bruce! 🦑
The mural, which is located on a wall on the corner of 3rd Street and Atlantic Avenue, depicts a crowd of cephalopods (octopus/squid) enjoying activities one might encounter at the Oceanfront (ie. eating pizza and ice cream, putting on sunglasses, playing with beach balls).
Bruce adds that she "represented the ever-changing beach community through the adaptive color-changing octopuses. I believe there are more positive interactions to be had as the Oceanfront becomes a more diversified, better place.”

Bayside Middle School Artist Residency
Students from Bayside 6th Grade Campus and Bayside Middle School installed their artwork at Williams Farm Park on April 8, 2022, marking the culmination of the “Lift Up Your Voice” Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) artist residency.
The program was the result of a partnership between the Virginia Beach Cultural Affairs Department and VBCPS, pairing artist Kevin Orlosky with students to create public art reflective of the school and community. This is the third public art residency program with VBCPS.
To create the project, students finished one of the following phrases: “I speak for….,” “I project…” or “my voice is….” and illustrated their words on artwork shaped like megaphones, symbolizing their expressions. After being displayed in Williams Farm Park, the student’s artwork was returned to their home school.

The week just started, but it feels like a Winds-day 💨.
“Wings,” by artist Lin Emery, is a kinetic aluminum sculpture located in the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts outdoor plaza. The sculpture is over 23 feet high, with an 18 foot orbit, and moves with the breeze.
Funding for the sculpture was generously donated by Tom and Juanita Felton, lifelong art advocates. “The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts is a definitive part of Virginia Beach, and a building to house all performing arts needs a magnificent sculpture as a focal point,” said Mrs. Felton.

Woodstock Skate Park Murals
In April 2021, the City of Virginia Beach's Cultural Affairs Department put out a call to artists to create skate culture-themed murals for Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation's brand new Woodstock Skate Park, which opened to the public on June 16, 2021.
Virginia Beach-based artist Brendan Tierney was selected to create the murals. Tierney, a lifelong skateboarder himself, created four mural panels located at the entrance to the skate park. The murals depict fun, colorful and skate-centric scenes that also highlight beach culture. Be on the lookout for a narwhal, skateboard ramp made of cheese and more! #vbarts
