Donald Lipski's ' The Canoes'

#FlashbackFriday This week is the three year anniversary of the installation of ‘The Canoes,’ by artist Donald Lipski! 🛶

‘The Canoes’ is a delicate yet powerful beacon, and a welcoming gateway and icon for the Bayfront area. It is softly lit in the evening by LED lights for visibility, and features a seating area overlooking spectacular views.

The 36-foot sculpture is poised on the pedestrian overlook of the Lesner Bridge welcoming visitors into the beauty and history of the Chesapeake Bay area. Artist Donald Lipski chose the canoe as the medium of his sculpture to create an immediate tie to the water with the most basic historic water craft. Each canoe has an intricate, lacy filigree design cut out of its aluminum, reminiscent of the decorative arts of the early settlers.

Thanks to Americans for the Arts for highlighting “Seashore Cathedral,” by Pepe Gaka, as an example of the arts incorporated into civic design! 🎨 🌉

“Seashore Cathedral” is a series of murals that utilize a geometric style, giving the impression of stained glass. Each column features detailed vignettes that represent different aspects of the area that make Virginia Beach unique. This dynamic artwork can be seen on the underpass columns of the Rudee Walkway that connects the marina to 4th Street municipal lot.

“Barreled,” the City of Virginia Beach’s latest placemaking installation, was featured in the July issue of CODAworx CODAMagazine! 🏄‍♀️ 🌊

The issue highlighted “Art for the Outdoors.” Art that is created to enhance our shared experience of the outdoors including parks, plazas, waterways, bridges, roundabouts, bike paths, and roadways.

“Barreled,” by Hive Public Space, celebrates Virginia Beach’s surfing culture and takes inspiration from one of the most sought out and short-lived experiences in surfing, riding through the barrel of a wave.

“Barreled” is accompanied by the mural “Broken Current,” which was created by local artist Navid Rahman. “Broken Current” illustrates powerful rip currents and tidal currents created by ocean waves.

See the installation for yourself next time you’re at 17th Street! “Barreled” is located at the corner of 17th Street and Pacific Avenue, directly across from 17th Street Surf Shop.

It’s #internationalkissingday💋, so check out this lovely moment illustrated by public art right here in Virginia Beach!

“The Kiss” was created by artist Gary Alsum from a 2004 photograph of Deborah Wood and her late husband, Breck, a long-time resident of Virginia Beach. The photograph depicts the pair kissing on a bench on the pier of their home in Currituck County, NC. Mrs. Wood, who commissioned the statue for her husband, wanted to share with others the love that she and her husband had by capturing this tender moment for eternity. ❤️ #vbarts #vbpublicart
