One of the most famous attractions of Prague, in the very center of the city. This is the oldest bridge over the Vltava and the second oldest in the Czech Republic. It was built under King Charles IV, between 1352 and 1402. We recommend visiting it in the morning when there are few visitors. In the evening, in the light of lanterns, the stone bridge with sculptural compositions is especially grandiose.

The eastern bridge tower is the passage from the bridge in Stare Mesto and is therefore called the Old Town Tower. The tower is located on an intermediate, not an end support, that is, directly above the water. The height of the building is about 47 meters above the bridge level. On the south side there is a staircase leading to the interior of the building. The tower is decorated with figurative sculptures of a high artistic level, coats of arms of the lands of the Holy Roman Empire; Above the gate, placed in a pointed arch, there are images of a kingfisher. Sculptures depicting St. Vitus (patron of the bridge), Charles IV and Wenceslas IV are on the second floor. Sculptures of the patrons of the Czech land - St. Vojtech and St. Sigismund are located at the very top. The mesh vaults in the passage of the western tower are also noteworthy. The tower is completed by a high roof with a characteristic saddle shape and bay windows with pointed spiers at the corners.

The new bridge was conceived by Charles IV. They built it almost in the same place as Yuditin. The remains of Judith's Bridge can be seen at the base of the pylon on which the Old Town Tower stands. Construction of the bridge lasted from 1357 until the beginning of the 15th century. It was entrusted to Peter Parler. The bridge tower on the Old Town Bank was built by architects from the workshop of Peter Parler around 1380.

The bridge is the link between Prague Castle and the Old Town. The so-called “Royal Road” led across the bridge (now the Prague Marathon). Many key events in the history of the city are associated with the bridge. For example, in 1420, the bridge helped the Hussites get to Mala Strana, and in 1648, from this bridge the Swedes, who captured and plundered the Castle and Mala Strana, attacked the right bank Old Town.
