Capt. David Gray was relieved as commanding officer of USS Hershel “Woody” Williams (ESB 4) by Capt. Chad Graham during a ceremony held in the ship’s hangar bay July 25, 2021.

The ceremony was presided over by Cmdr. Ernique Sesler, executive officer, Hershel “Woody” Williams (ESB 4).

Gray, a graduate of Old Dominion University and the Naval War College, joined the Navy in August 1990. He assumed command of Hershel Williams at Naval Station Rota, Spain in June 2021 and oversaw the turnover process between the ship’s two alternating crews.

Gray’s next command will be the Expeditionary Warfighting Development Center at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story.
