is an opportunity to recognize the impact of volunteer service and the power of volunteers to tackle one of society’s greatest challenges, to build stronger more inclusive communities.

Today we are highlighting Coach Marcus from Area 2. We are so grateful for Coach Marcus and all of the amazing Tidewater Region volunteers that help keep our programs running!

Check out the story on Coach Marcus and read about the other volunteers we are highlighting this week: https://www.specialolympicsva.org/marcus-leggett?locale=en

Marcus, whose son is also a Special Olympics Virginia athlete, has been with Area 2 for 15 years as the local coordinator in Virginia Beach and as a coach of multiple sports year round. After being called coach at the first event he attended, he knew he was locked in.

In case you missed it, see below for an important update about Return to Activities that was posted last week on June 29th. Continue staying safe & healthy everyone!

Return to Activity Updates from Special Olympics Virginia

June 29, 2020

The health and safety of our athletes and volunteers continue to be paramount. Special Olympics Virginia will adopt the Return to Activities (R2A) Plan as designed by Special Olympics Inc. In order to provide all the information necessary for safe return as well as appropriate volunteer and coach training opportunities, Special Olympics Virginia will begin the first phase of return to activities August 1, 2020.

In July, Area leadership, coaches and volunteers will receive the Return to Activities Plan and will be provided dates for training opportunities. The Return to Activities start date of August 1, 2020 includes any event (sports, fundraising or social) that involve athlete participation. Guidelines regarding fundraising events that do not include athletes also are being developed and will be shared soon.

We appreciate your patience as we work through this and look forward to having our athletes active again. If you have any questions, please contact Dave Pawlowski.

Rick Jeffrey, Special Olympics Virginia President
