Air Show Fans,
Did you know there is a piece of flying history here in Virginia Beach with ties to Naval Station Norfolk during WWII? The Military Aviation Museum in Pungo has one of the few remaining flying PBY Catalinas in the world!

The Catalina was an American flying boat of 1930’s design that was one of the most widely used, multi-role, designs of the war. It served in military branches as an observation, night attack, maritime patrol, bomber, air-sea rescue, and anti-submarine aircraft. The Military Aviation Museum’s PBY-5, Bureau Number 48294, was built in 1943, and served in a variety of locations around the Atlantic during World War II, including being stationed right here at Naval Station Norfolk. She had an extensive length of service that took her to San Diego, French Morocco, Canary Islands, Gibraltar, and the Azores, but her history after the military was far more interesting. Leaving government service in 1956, she then had a long and colorful civilian career, including stints as a fuel tanker in Alaska, and was eventually seized by the US Government for drug smuggling. She was purchased by the museum in England in 2001.

Hey, Oceana Air Show fans!

We're working hard to put the finishing touches on the Live Broadcast NAS Oceana Air Show and are getting very excited to get this show off the ground! To remind everyone, the base is not open to the public and the best seats in the house will be on-line to catch all the action and cool interviews, videos and more.

While the final performer line up is still being finalized, we can tell you that we'll have appearances by the F/A-18 Super Hornet, A-10 Thunderbolt 2 (or "Warthog", affectionately), F-22 Raptor and the MV-22 Osprey from the Marine Corps. Skydive Suffolk and Team Fastrax will provide parachute jumps and we'll have flybys by current Navy aircraft as well as historic war birds like the TBM Avenger and the PBY Catalina.

We'll also take a moment to honor and thank our local First Responders and Frontline Workers for all they do for us each and every day with an awesome parade procession led by the Patriot Guard Riders.

Tune in to this page or the Naval Air Station Oceana page at noon on Saturday, September 19th to take in all the action!!!

COVID-19 Update:

NAS Oceana is currently considering a range of options regarding the annual air show scheduled for September 19-20. Each of these options take into account the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic, Navy and State of Virginia policies in place, and most importantly the health and safety of the community, our partners, and our Navy personnel. Certainly, the COVID-19 environment presents significant challenges for the planning of events in the future. We will know much more as the situation evolves and will likely be making a decision on the best way forward in the next few weeks. We sincerely appreciate the patience and understanding of our valued fans, partners, and sponsors.

Thunderbirds, Blue Angels to Salute New York, New Jersey
and Pennsylvania COVID-19 Responders

NAS PENSACOLA, Fla. – The U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds, and the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, will honor frontline COVID-19 responders and essential workers with formation flights over New York City, Newark, Trenton and Philadelphia April 28.

“We are truly excited to take to the skies with our Navy counterparts for a nation-wide tribute to the men and women keeping our communities safe.” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col.
John Caldwell, Thunderbird 1 and mission commander for the flyover. “We hope to give Americans a touching display of American resolve that honors those serving on the
frontline of our fight with COVID-19.”

A formation of 6 F-16C/D Fighting Falcon and 6 F/A-18C/D Hornet aircraft will conduct these flyovers as a collaborative salute to healthcare workers, first responders, military,
and other essential personnel while standing in solidarity with all Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are incredibly honored to have the opportunity to salute those working on the frontline of the COVID-19 response, we are in awe of your strength and resilience,” said Cmdr. Brian Kesselring, U.S. Navy Blue Angels commanding officer and flight leader. “Thank you to all of those in essential industries keeping our nation moving forward. We will get through this. We are all in this together.”

This mission, the first of several planned over the coming weeks, is the culmination of more than a month of planning and coordination between the two teams and numerous city and government offices.

Residents along the flight path can expect a few seconds of jet noise as the aircraft pass overhead, along with the sight of 12 high-performance aircraft flying close in precise formation.

Flyovers in Newark, New York City and surrounding boroughs will start at noon (EST) and last approximately 35 minutes.

Flyovers in Trenton will start at 1:45 p.m. (EST) and last approximately 10 minutes.

Flyovers in Philadelphia will start at 2 p.m. (EST) and last approximately 20 minutes.

Residents in these areas will be able to see the flyover from the safety of their home- quarantine and should maintain all social distancing guidelines during this event. They should also refrain from traveling to landmarks, hospitals and gathering in large groups to view the flyover. A detailed flight route will be released on the day prior to the flyover.

The teams welcome and encourage viewers to tag the flyover on social media with the hashtag #AmericaStrong.

VDOF was invited to attend the Naval Air Station Oceana STEM day in association with the NAS Oceana Air Show. Several VDOF staff members worked with Smokey Bear to interact with the 5,000 fifth grade students from Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, demonstrating forestry tools and advocating for wildland fire prevention. Smokey even got to spend some time with his new friend, Stewie the Sea Turtle, the ambassador for the Navy’s stewardship of the world’s oceans and marine life.
