COVID-19 Update:

NAS Oceana is currently considering a range of options regarding the annual air show scheduled for September 19-20. Each of these options take into account the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic, Navy and State of Virginia policies in place, and most importantly the health and safety of the community, our partners, and our Navy personnel. Certainly, the COVID-19 environment presents significant challenges for the planning of events in the future. We will know much more as the situation evolves and will likely be making a decision on the best way forward in the next few weeks. We sincerely appreciate the patience and understanding of our valued fans, partners, and sponsors.

Thunderbirds, Blue Angels to Salute New York, New Jersey
and Pennsylvania COVID-19 Responders

NAS PENSACOLA, Fla. – The U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds, and the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, will honor frontline COVID-19 responders and essential workers with formation flights over New York City, Newark, Trenton and Philadelphia April 28.

“We are truly excited to take to the skies with our Navy counterparts for a nation-wide tribute to the men and women keeping our communities safe.” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col.
John Caldwell, Thunderbird 1 and mission commander for the flyover. “We hope to give Americans a touching display of American resolve that honors those serving on the
frontline of our fight with COVID-19.”

A formation of 6 F-16C/D Fighting Falcon and 6 F/A-18C/D Hornet aircraft will conduct these flyovers as a collaborative salute to healthcare workers, first responders, military,
and other essential personnel while standing in solidarity with all Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are incredibly honored to have the opportunity to salute those working on the frontline of the COVID-19 response, we are in awe of your strength and resilience,” said Cmdr. Brian Kesselring, U.S. Navy Blue Angels commanding officer and flight leader. “Thank you to all of those in essential industries keeping our nation moving forward. We will get through this. We are all in this together.”

This mission, the first of several planned over the coming weeks, is the culmination of more than a month of planning and coordination between the two teams and numerous city and government offices.

Residents along the flight path can expect a few seconds of jet noise as the aircraft pass overhead, along with the sight of 12 high-performance aircraft flying close in precise formation.

Flyovers in Newark, New York City and surrounding boroughs will start at noon (EST) and last approximately 35 minutes.

Flyovers in Trenton will start at 1:45 p.m. (EST) and last approximately 10 minutes.

Flyovers in Philadelphia will start at 2 p.m. (EST) and last approximately 20 minutes.

Residents in these areas will be able to see the flyover from the safety of their home- quarantine and should maintain all social distancing guidelines during this event. They should also refrain from traveling to landmarks, hospitals and gathering in large groups to view the flyover. A detailed flight route will be released on the day prior to the flyover.

The teams welcome and encourage viewers to tag the flyover on social media with the hashtag #AmericaStrong.

Thank you to the City of Virginia Beach for your support during the NAS Oceana Air Show each and every year.

Without the partnership of NAS Oceana and the City of Virginia Beach, the annual air show wouldn't be the safe and exciting operation it is today!

On behalf of the entire Virginia Beach Naval Aviation community and air show staff, Naval Air Station Oceana Commanding Officer Capt. VDOF was invited to attend the Naval Air Station Oceana STEM day in association with the NAS Oceana Air Show. Several VDOF staff members worked with Smokey Bear to interact with the 5,000 fifth grade students from Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, demonstrating forestry tools and advocating for wildland fire prevention. Smokey even got to spend some time with his new friend, Stewie the Sea Turtle, the ambassador for the Navy’s stewardship of the world’s oceans and marine life.

NAS Oceana is happy to host students from Virginia Beach City Public Schools and Chesapeake Public Schools for the STEM Lab Learning Day during the Air Show rehearsal, held on the Friday of Air Show weekend!

Students have the opportunity to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math at the various exhibits, and see first-hand from the performers in the sky. We hope students are inspired by what they learned today to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Live at the flightline this morning. Come out and see the NAS Oceana Air Show!

The 60th NAS Oceana Air Show is this weekend & we’re getting up close and personal with some of the planes. News 3 reporter Anthony Sabella is LIVE with the Jack Links team! http://via.wtkr.com/Po7nq John Klatt Airshows

09/16/2019

On Saturday and Sunday, 21-22 September, the gates open to the public at 8am, flying starts around 10am, and the Thunderbirds perform around 3 to 4pm. Early arrival is best to avoid traffic. You may leave at any time and re-enter after you leave, but bear in mind traffic only gets heavier as the day goes along and you’ll need to exit the base and re-enter with incoming vehicles.

The performers scheduled to perform at the 2019 NAS Oceana Air Show are as follows: The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, GEICO Skytypers, Skip Stewart, Gene Soucy, John Klatt, Lt. Col (Ret.), Greg & Ashley Shelton, The Shockwave Jet Truck, Firewalkers International, Black Daggers U.S. Army Parachute Team, Skydive Suffolk, Virginia Patriot Guard, Dan McLaren & Mach 1 Productions, F/A-18F Super Hornet, Air Power Demonstration, The Fleet Flyby, Rob Reider (5 Time Emmy Award Winning Air Show Announcer), and Steve Myott (Uncle Sam on Stilts).

09/13/2019

While there are no specific medical restrictions, the 2019 NAS Oceana Air Show environment can be challenging for some, especially if it is warmer than normal. Attending an air show can involve lots of walking and sometimes high temperatures. So remember to stay hydrated throughout the day. Also, there is a significant amount of jet noise associated with tactical aircraft and U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds performances. Ear protection is highly recommended for both adults and children. Consult with your pediatrician prior to bringing your small children to the air show. We have a very robust medical presence on the flight line in the event of a medical emergency, but guests should use sound judgment based on pre-existing medical conditions or medications.

The Airshow is less than 10 days away and your safety is our primary concern. The NAS Oceana flight line is a very large area so we definitely recommend comfortable footwear. September temperatures are generally mild but be prepared to protect yourself from the sun with a hat, long sleeved light shirt and sunscreen. There are paid seating areas if you desire to upgrade your experience but you’re more than welcome to bring your own chairs (folding or bagged) to find a spot to set up and watch the show. There are a large number of food/beverage vendors as well that accept cash or charge.

Remember the following important safety tips:

– Uniformed security personnel are there to help. Follow all instructions from uniformed security personnel.

– Very few things on our flight line are soft to the touch; most things are made of metal and have lots of edges on them. Keep your eyes focused in the direction you’re walking and be aware of low-hanging (and flying!) aircraft components.

– We have a very robust medical presence on the flight line in the event of a medical emergency, but guests should use sound judgment based on pre-existing medical conditions or medications. Notify any uniformed security person or air show worker if you or any member of your group requires medical attention.
