Holocaust survivors deserve a day of joy; a day of celebration. Not a day to share with condemnation of the N***s, but a day to celebrate their lives they built in response to the Holocaust. Survivors represent the best in all of us, the best of the human spirit.

Some members of the committee said such a ban, proposed two months after a prominent conservative activist was caught meeting with a famous white supremacist, might be a “slippery slope” or too vague.

On 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht, Holocaust survivors say they feel familiar antisemitism:

"Last week in New York, hundreds of Holocaust survivors posed with pictures of the roughly 240 people being held hostage by Hamas in Gaza, as part of a worldwide campaign to keep attention on their plight.
“I’m back there all over again,” Toby Levy, 90, said at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, where she is a longtime docent. “This is how it started with the Germans.”

"It just brought back so many memories," one Holocaust survivor said about learning about Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

Join us today in remembering and sharing the story of the SS Exodus. 76 years ago today, it set sail with over 4,500 Jewish passengers onboard, most of whom were Holocaust survivors.
One week later, they were forced to turn back from the Port of Haifa & return to Europe.
As we honor them, take a look at how our Federation focuses on Holocaust education.

The Elie Wiesel student art show is now on display at the Simon Family JCC. This annual competition showcases the work of talented young artists who creatively explore the lessons of the Holocaust through their art. The exhibit features many amazing student artworks, including paintings, sculptures, and collages.

It is truly inspiring to see how these students use their art to convey the dangers of prejudice and the importance of moral courage. The exhibit will be on display through May 31.

This past weekend, Holocaust survivors and their families came together to celebrate the publication of "To Life: The Past is Present." Together they shared stories of the past, reminisced about those who were unable to join us, and spoke of the importance of learning from Holocaust history in the present. To all the supporters and creators of this book — and onto all the people who will learn from its pages — we say 'thank you.'

The contemporary American story of the Holocaust focuses on the U.S. role in helping to bring the N**i regime of terror to an end. A more nuanced understanding of America’s reaction is less comforting.

Many Americans know a simple version of Holocaust history, in which their country played the savior. The reality isn’t so comfortable, this historian writes.

“I was supposed to be dead at 6 and a half . … So why did I survive everything? I believe I survived to tell the story to as many people (as possible),” survivor Judah Samet told the Shoah Foundation.

Judah Samet survived two unthinkable tragedies: imprisonment in a N**i concentration camp and the 2018 massacre at Pittsburgh's Tree of Life synagogue. But still he held onto his faith in humanity -- and made a point of sharing what he'd witnessed.

When I heard of Max Eisen's death, I was standing in an exhibit of family photos in a processing center building at Birkenau. I saw a family photo, and was Googling him to show his bio to my tour group. I saw in shock that he had passed the day before. His message will resonate with all who his amazing life as a survivor touched. May his memory be for a blessing.

The survivor once told a crowd that they need to be aware of what is happening around them because “we cannot repeat the same mistakes.”

Raisi will be speaking at the 77th session of the U.N. General Assembly later this week, his first appearance at the annual gathering of world leaders.
Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Gilad Erdan also decried Raisi’s comments as “shocking,” calling on U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres to deny him “a world stage to spread antisemitism and hatred.”

The Iranian president's comment that "there are some signs" that the Holocaust happened but that the issue required more research has sparked an outcry from Israel, a country home to tens of thousands of Holocaust survivors.

Our Mission, Our Story

As our local survivor, Hanns Loewenbach (1915-2012), always told his audiences, “Evil does not need your help, just your indifference.” The mission of the Holocaust Commission of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater is to foster an understanding of the uniqueness and magnitude of the Holocaust, while inspiring students, teachers, and our community to champion human dignity in our constantly changing world.

The Holocaust Commission accomplishes its mission through its extensive educational programs. These programs include: What We Carry, the Elie Wiesel Student Writing and Visual Arts Competition, the annual Yom Hashoah Commemoration, The Biennial Educators’ Conference, Annual Educator Awards, Faces of Survival (portrait series), Through the Eyes of a Friend. You can support the Commission through tax deductible White and Red Rose donations.
