Fathers In Training (FIT) a program of the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services has been in existence since 1996 and has served approximately 8000 fathers and their families to date. •FIT provides an environment that is conducive to learning and will address some very serious barriers to effective fathering such as domestic violence, anger management, conflict resolution, responsible fathering and working with support systems. •FIT has an employment component. •FIT has an alumni group for those fathers who have completed the program and wish to continue, or expand their involvement in the community. •FIT is geared to the protection of children and family. Domestic violence issues are at the forefront of every group meeting. FIT has zero tolerance for violence in the home. •Twenty week (20 sessions) training sessions on Monday nights from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Participants must complete at least 17 out of 20 sessions in order to receive a certificate of Program Completion.

Mission: Our primary purpose is to strengthen families. We do that by focusing services on the father. The core philosophy of the program reflects certain realities that the men face in their life journeys. We believe that a well-prepared, motivated father is essential to the physical, financial and emotional well-being of children and families. The Fathers in Training program views fatherhood identity as a learned process. It is the program's contention that when a father becomes more aware of how he relates to himself, his significant others, and the world, he will be more mentally, physically and emotionally healthy. Consequently, one of FIT's primary functions is to guide the participant through the process of becoming more aware of his own potential as a father. It is this healthier father who is most likely to create a healthier environment for his family and children. We believe that the healthier the environment the father contributes to, the healthier the relationship between the father and child can become. FIT models a safe, healthy environment for the family and children by creating a positive group process that the father participates in.

General information

Fathers in Training (FIT) provides a supportive environment where young fathers can learn to parent their children, become financially responsible and learn about relationships, health and sexuality. The primary purpose is to strengthen families, by focusing services on the father. It is the healthier father that is most likely to create a healthier environment for his family. We have created a safe, but challenging environment for fathers to engage in conversations of the joys and challenges of fatherhood with other fathers.
