I hope that after this fall's election, our new School Board will be more collaborative and more respectful of one another — grounded in the understanding that the only "agenda" any of us should bring is wanting to see staff thrive, kids succeed, and communities flourish.
Most of what makes that possible isn't red or blue. It's for every kid, every teacher, every staff member who shows up to work each day without ever wondering if they're part of somebody's partisan agenda.

So here's my pledge, if I have the honor of representing District 2 on the School Board:

1. A workplace the best teachers want to be part of. That includes our newest graduates looking for their first classroom — we should be competing to be the STAR of the Commonwealth for teaching talent, not the district people leave.

2. Recognition that rigor takes many forms. Yes, traditional academics matter. But so do the Academies, the Advanced Technical Center, our Dual Language Immersion programs, and the full range of Career and Technical Education courses that let students discover a passion and their own talent — not just one path to success, but many, held to equal esteem.

3. Real, regular engagement — not just at election time. Families, community organizations, and local businesses all have a role to play in wrapping support around our students so that every graduate walks out ready to write the best-selling next chapter of their own life.

Our kids deserve a board that shows up for them — together, and above the noise.

I’m here at the second day of the School Board retreat. Day 1 was certainly enlightening — from AI to screen time to building a school calendar…the staff presentations were chock full of great information for the Board to digest for making future decisions.

I’m eager to see and hear the discussions today around some of the issues that many here on Facebook have been circulating their opinions about—gifted education (and the future of here in VBCPS), dual language immersion program, and some budget and pay inequities discussion.

Should be an informative day… stay tuned for my wrap up and thoughts by the end of the day.

𝙇𝙀𝙏'𝙎 𝙏𝘼𝙇𝙆 𝘼𝘽𝙊𝙐𝙏 𝙒𝙃𝘼𝙏'𝙎 𝘼𝘾𝙏𝙐𝘼𝙇𝙇𝙔 𝙊𝙉 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙏𝘼𝘽𝙇𝙀

Let's be clear about what's real. VBSchools is currently in year 2 of a 5-year plan with regard to Gifted Education. Nothing in that plan closes Old Donation School (ODS). What IS actually under discussion is how to 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧-𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙜𝙞𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 in neighborhood schools — because right now, some schools might have a resource teacher serving 5 identified gifted students while others have 40 sharing the same level of support.

That's a real 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 question. It is not a closure. And it's how
disciplined, experienced professionals handle policy discussions: by reading the plan, understanding the data, and asking what would genuinely improve outcomes. It is not done through hyperbole and conjecture — most of it false — which then stirs up anxiety and fear rather than informs.

ODS is our flagship, one of the top-performing schools in Virginia -- 𝒂𝒏𝒅 we should also grow cluster services so every gifted student — no matter their zip code — gets real support. That's not either/or. It's both/and, and it's what the actual plan already calls for.

Voters in District 2 - I hope you know that with my experience and expertise of working in public education for 30 years, I will make the effort to fully understand and ask the right questions to get to a path forward -- I don't think it furthers any good outcome when people who either intentionally or unintentionally amplify misinformation, possibly just to stir up fear or anxiety. That's not what I know leadership to be about. It's about getting the facts, talking about opportunities and how to grow our program to serve our kids even better than we do today. Seems simple and straightforward but it takes a disciplined leader to sit down, listening to all of the input from those who are living the day to day and then asking the questions that guide us to answers. It might take time and planning -- which is why we bring these things up now -- in year 2 or 3 so that we can plan...

So let's talk...if you want to sit down and share stories, I'm available. Contact me to set up a time to share your personal story -- whether you're a teacher, parent, student, or community member...I'd love to hear your thoughts on how to bring better access and services to better serve those in VB schools who don't have the opportunity currently to attend ODS and all of its amazing inclusive advanced curriculum and resources.
