Today Mr. Rickard kicked of the September Science Lab lesson for our Third Graders. Each class visits him in the science lab once a month. Their first science unit in third grade is how things interact with water. This month's lab lesson is on the myth that salt disappears when it dissolves.
They look at salt under a microscope. Then measure the mass of a container of water. Pour salt in without stirring and measure the mass again. The mass is recorded each time. Then they stir the salt in and measure the mass again.

They see the mass is the same between the water with salt at the bottom and with the salt dissolved. Therefore the salt did not disappear. It just broke down into really tiny pieces.

Then they look at salt water under a microscope and find the tiny bits of salt confirming that its still there.

First week of school and we are already harvesting from the school garden and delivering to the cafeteria. Day 3: Eggplant, Day 2: Bell Peppers, Day 3: Sweet Peppers. I also grabbed a snack of black berries for myself. The Bell Peppers had someone standing watch.. A little Praying Mantis looking for bugs to snack on.

WAVE Church visited Newtown Elementary on August 8th for a Day of Service. They also visited Bettie F. Williams, Bayside Middle and Bayside High School. They had about 50 people at Newtown. All ages from infant to senior citizens. They helped with beautifying our school through working in our courtyard and bus loop gardens. They removed a rotted pallet garden, mounted a mural, weeded, planted, move benches and tables. They spread about 8-9 yards of mulch. It was hot, but it was amazing. Thank you WAVE church. Good Morning. We hope you all are having a fun and productive summer. WAVE Church is organizing a Service Day at Newtown, Bettie F. Williams, Bayside Middle and Bayside High School on August 8 from 9-1. That is a tall order that needs lots of helpers. For Newtown, the work will focus on getting the interior courtyard and bus loop garden all caught up and looking good for the new school year. We had an amazing turnout for this week’s Tilling and Tending Family Garden Time. It’s amazing how much work we get done with each of these events.

Good Morning. We have had a great turnout for Newtown Elementary's Tilling and Tending Tuesday's Family Garden Time. Our last one had a total of 25 people at the garden helping with weeding, watering and more. Many even took excess tomato plants home to grow in pots or plant in their own garden.

The 30th is our next event. It is from 5-6PM. We might be doing some sanding and painting of benches that night as well.
