Paint in hand, students from Virginia City High School helped bring a longtime idea to life above Lockwood this weekend.

A large white “L” now stands on the hillside overlooking the community, the result of a student-led National Honor Society project by VCHS students Luke Branson and Derek McCoy. For both students, the effort connects personal history with a broader tradition of hillside letters seen across Nevada.

Storey County Director of Health & Community Services Stacy York said the project also honors a promise made to Charlotte “Char,” a senior citizen she worked closely with who had long hoped to see an “L” above Lockwood before she passed.

A key piece making the project possible came from Pittsburgh Paints, whose team donated 50 gallons of paint from their operations at the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center to help bring the vision to life.

Those involved say the finished hillside letter represents more than paint on a mountain, pointing instead to community pride, student leadership, and connection across generations.
