Don't wait for an evacuation to figure out your plan.

With recent wildfires burning across Nevada, take a few minutes now to prepare. The statewide Ready, Set, Go! approach helps residents know what to do before and during an evacuation.

🟢 READY: Make a plan.
Know your community and decide where you will go if you need to leave. Perimeter provides real-time evacuation information. Find your zone at www.perimetermap.com.

🟡 SET: Get alerts.
Smart911 sends emergency alerts directly to your phone. Storey County residents can sign up to receive important emergency information, regardless of where they live in the county. Sign up at https://www.smart911.com/smart911/ref/reg.action

🔴 GO: Evacuate when directed.
If officials order an evacuation, don't wait. Follow instructions, leave promptly and take your emergency supplies with you.

Final Call: Community Project Grant. Only 4 days left to apply!

The deadline to apply for the FY26-27 Community Project Grant is Aug. 31, 2026.
Community groups can apply for up to $20,000 per area for projects that benefit local residents. Each project team must include at least three Storey County residents.

Grant Areas:
• Area 1: Lockwood, Mustang, Painted Rock and Northeast
• Area 2: Virginia City Highlands and Lagomarsino
• Area 3: Virginia City and Gold Hill
• Area 4: Mark Twain

Good Storey: Meet the Trash Busters
Sometimes making a difference in your community starts with something as simple as picking up a piece of trash.

For Cory Wood, Jim “Diamond Jim” Caravallo, and Lilly, their four-legged mascot, that idea has grown into Trash Busters, a monthly community cleanup effort in Virginia City.

What started with Wood and Caravallo noticing litter around town has grown into a group of volunteers who come together to help keep their community clean. Their motto says it all: “Taking pride in our community.”

Trash Busters received funding through Storey County’s FY25-26 Community Project Grant program, which helped provide the equipment and supplies needed for their cleanups.

But the heart of the project is the people who show up. Volunteers give their time when they can, and the group hopes its work inspires others to take pride in their own neighborhoods, too.

As volunteer Darcy McMillin put it, you don’t have to be a member of Trash Busters to make a difference. Sometimes, it can be as simple as taking a walk around your block and picking up some trash.
