Al was a big heart with a big personality, and a good friend to so many within Storey County and beyond. His storytelling, laughter, and steady presence will be profoundly missed, along with the friendship, guidance, and humor he offered so freely.

His tireless dedication to the fire service, and especially his commitment to Storey County is unmatched.

Please keep his family, his friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him in your thoughts during this difficult time.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Al Drake (1955–2025). Al was a dedicated firefighter, a trusted colleague, and a good friend to so many. His service, kindness, and steady presence will be deeply missed. Keeping his family and all who loved him in our thoughts.

🚒🔥 FIRE SEASON SAFETY REMINDER 🔥🚒
From Storey County Volunteer Fire Department

Wildfire risk is high — help us keep Storey County safe by using outdoor equipment responsibly.
🌾💨 One small spark can start a big fire.

🔧 Equipment that can spark wildfires:
• Lawn mowers
• W**d eaters
• Chain saws
• Grinders
• Welders
• Tractors
• Trimmers

✅ SAFETY TIPS ✅
⏰ Mow before 10 a.m.
❌ Never mow when it’s windy or very dry.

🛠️ Keep it clean
Make sure exhaust systems and spark arresters are in good working condition.
Clear out carbon buildup regularly.

⛽ Fuel up the right way
• Use the recommended fuel
• Don’t top off the tank

🚗 No driving on dry grass
Hot engines + dry brush = wildfire risk

🔥 Be smart. Be safe. Do your part. 🔥
Together we can protect our community this fire season.

There is a Red Flag Warning in effect for the Sierra Front, into the Basin and Range, from 1 PM Thurs until midnight Fri. Gusts could reach 60 mph in wind prone areas, up to 80 mph along Sierra ridges. Avoid activities that may cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires, as gusty winds could cause rapid fire spread.

🚒We’re out in the Highlands this week topping off the cisterns! 💧

You might’ve seen us rolling through the neighborhood — but what exactly ARE these mysterious cisterns? 🤔

Cisterns are large underground water storage tanks strategically placed throughout our community. In areas where fire hydrants are limited or unavailable, these cisterns serve as a critical water source for firefighting operations. By keeping them full and ready, we’re making sure we can protect our community faster and more effectively when every second counts. ⏱️❤️

Topping off the cisterns is part of our regular maintenance to keep our fire protection infrastructure strong. They’re absolutely vital when it comes to fighting fires out here in the Highlands! 🔥🚫

So if you spot us filling up a tank or cruising by in the fire truck, give us a wave! 👋 Or drop a comment below to say hi — we love hearing from you!

Thanks for helping us keep Storey County safe and fire-ready!
