From Executive Director Nathan Thompson:
"We were invited to an Eveleth Elks dinner, where I was informed that we would receive a 'substantial' donation for our mission. This is the first time I have received an invitation with such wording for a dinner. The Elks put on a great dinner with fancy tables and a wonderful meal. The lodge gave significant donations to five other community organizations with awards from $5,000 to $15,000.
"They let folks know at the beginning of the program that a total of $125,000 were going to be donated over the course of the evening. A few did the math… I began to get more and more excited as we ended up as the last one called up for our award. The Elks referenced Habitat’s mission in the community and the incredible difference that we have made in the lives of our neighbors on the Iron Range and in the community of Eveleth. Then they asked me to come up and receive our donation of $80,000. Yes, that is correct. Not $800, not $8,000, but $80,000!
"As I thanked the group for the donation, I mentioned that we had just purchased a home back in West Eveleth and that we would also start working towards building again in Eveleth. I also had a great conversation afterwards with Mayor Adam Roen about possible lot acquisition opportunities.
"The Elks operate on four core pillars: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity. They focus heavily on community betterment, American patriotism, and volunteerism. I am honored that the Eveleth Elks Lodge has trusted us with such a great investment for their community. What a great night for Habitat and our mission!"
