Vernon County Land & Water

Vernon County Land & Water Our mission is to foster and carry out locally led conservation.

The mission of Vernon County Land and Water Conservation Department is to foster and carry out locally led conservation. Locally led conservation is based on the principle that local leaders and community members are best suited to identify and resolve local natural resource problems. It challenges local, state, and federal agency representatives and urban and rural neighbors to work together and take responsibility for addressing resource needs.

WISCONSIN'S DEER DONATION PROGRAM

ATTENTION HUNTERS OF VERNON COUNTY
Here is a friendly reminder that your harvest could go to good use. Hunters in Wisconsin can donate their deer to local food pantries. Hunters can donate the entire deer free of charge and retain the head and antlers for mounting if desired. When dropping your deer off at a processor, you will be asked to complete the log sheet indicating your intent to donate the deer. The donated deer will be processed, and the venison will be distributed to charitable organizations to help feed those Wisconsinites in need of food assistance. Hunters and the public can also voluntarily donate $1 or more to help cover venison processing fees. You can donate at any DNR license sales location or online through your go wild account.

Pictured below is a new Great Plains no-till drill we were able to purchase this season with funding from the Ho-Chunk Nation. Already this drill has been used a number of times for native prairie and pollinator plantings that help with soil health and water retention, provide habitat enhancement and also fit the land management goals of the landowners. We want to thank the Ho-Chunk Nation for the funding that made this possible and look forward to working with landowners in the future to help expand the use of this great conservation tool!

If you're a Timber Coulee resident please take a moment to complete this survey! Your input will help inform the important work being done on this watershed plan and make sure the plan is tailored to what watershed residents see on the ground there everyday.

A watershed plan for the Timber Coulee watershed is currently being developed by a collaborative team consisting of Vernon, La Crosse, and Monroe Land and Water Conservation Departments and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. This plan will serve as a community-guided roadmap for reducing flooding, maintaining and improving water quality, and supporting healthy land use.

A watershed plan identifies challenges and opportunities within the area where all the water drains to a common point. In Timber Coulee, this includes creeks, farmland, forests, and communities. By understanding local priorities, we can work together to develop a watershed plan that protects clean water, reduces flooding, and supports a thriving landscape for future generations.

To do this effectively, the planning team needs your input. Please take a few minutes to complete the short survey by scanning the QR code or visiting https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdZEkG1z7ZO2O0FyBGoMP9tEWN9XX7Jos8sExijyt7uUSvDOQ/viewform?usp=header OR visit our website (www.valley stewardship network.org) for a link to the survey.

We're excited to announce that jointly with Valley Stewardship Network we'll be hosting a grazing workshop featuring Steve Kenyon on August 19th! Steve has been custom grazing land near Edmonton, Alberta on leased land for over 25 years. He has authored a number of books including "The Calendar of the Year-Round Grazier" and "Ranching like a 12-Year-Old: Ranching that is Simple, Easy, and Fun!".

Registration is free but RSVPs are greatly appreciated so we know what to plan for lunch! See the attached flyer for the Vernon County event for more details - link is included below for registration or you can call the number on the flyer to register.

If you're unable to make the Vernon County event this workshop is part of a series of events featuring Steve Kenyon happening in SW Wisconsin hosted by some great partner organizations - there is a second flyer attached with times, dates and registration information for events in Sauk and Grant Counties.
