Oval Park

Oval Park Dating back to 1875, Oval Park is Visalia's oldest city park and newest venue. For more info, go here: http://www.ovalpark.org/vision/

In 2011, the City of Visalia recruited the Visalia Rescue Mission to revitalize the Park and the surrounding neighborhood. There has never been such a concerted effort to change the dynamic of this park, to attract blossoming businesses, and to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the whole community.

It's been quite a roller coaster over the past couple years riding the rails of community development. One of the more hilarious points of contention is the name of this Park. YES! It's officially "Lincoln Oval Park" but even Visalia Parks and Recreation changed the sign for one simple reason...MARKETING. Much like Orchard Supply Hardware is now just "OSH", Oval Park is just shorter.

So a couple things:
1. Lincoln Oval Park is not named after a former Visalia pioneer or family from the 19th century who broke its ground. It's named after Abraham Lincoln...the former president...who never visited Visalia.
2. It's not the original name (see "North Park" on this 1895 map).

So...let's move on to what really matters: a safe and vibrant neighborhood!

GREAT read: "You don’t have to look very far these days to see that we are in the midst of an urban park renaissance. Examples from all over the country are proving that parks can raise city profiles, stimulate development, increase property values, attract tourists and, most importantly, improve the quality of life for urban dwellers."
