Daffodil Hill

Daffodil Hill Permanently Closed Family owned and operated by the Lucot and Ryan family, Daffodil Hill is a 4 acre farm owned by the McLaughlin family since 1887. to 4 p.m.

The farm began as a 36-acre ranch and toll road for travelers and teamsters hauling timber. In the early days of the Gold Rush, Daffodil Hill was a regular stopping place for teamsters hauling timber from the Sierras down to the Kennedy and Argonaut Mines, and for eastbound travelers heading for the Comstock Lode on the Amador-Nevada Wagon Road (Highway 88). In 1887, after coming west from New Yor

k and Ohio, Arthur and his wife, Lizzie, began to plant the first daffodil bulbs in their spare time. The bulbs have since been lovingly nurtured. Not a commercial enterprise, nor formally publicized or promoted, the ranch has been owned by the same family since it was acquired in 1887 by wagon pioneers Arthur McLaughlin and Elizabeth “Lizzie” van Vorst-McLaughlin. Over a century of nurturing ….. Today, much of the landscape around the old homestead is covered with more than 300 named varieties of daffodils. For the last twenty years, the McLaughlins have continued to plant up to 6,000 new bulbs a year. It is estimated that today, Daffodil Hill is carpeted with over 300,000 bulbs. Daffodil Hill is in a beautiful alpine setting at an elevation of over 3,000 feet. With pine trees, an old barn, wagon wheels, and rusting mining equipment and farming tools, it appeals to anyone with a love of nature. Flowers are everywhere, with pea-fowl, chickens, pigeons and lambs making themselves at home. More bulbs are added each year, with the help of private donations. Today, the bulbs number more that 300,000 and include not only 300 varieties of daffodils, but also a large number of other varieties of bulbs and flowers, as well. Nature sets the schedule for public viewing. Daffodil Hill opens when 25 percent of the flowers are in bloom and closes when only 25 percent remain. The best time to visit Daffodil Hill is the spring, usually from the end of March through the first three weeks of April. Daffodil Hill is open only at this time of year, after that it goes back to a working ranch. The hill is open Monday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. However, in some years, inclement weather closes the farm. Admission and parking are free, the only charges my be from local youth groups raising funds in concession stands across the road.

Ladies and gentlemen it looks like we’re going to be able to open for the 2019 season on Saturday, March 30th! Our hours are 10am-4pm 7 days a week. (weather permitting) ⏰

It is unknown how long this season will last as we are expecting more rain 4/2-4/7. We are only open as long as the weather allows so please check the weather forecast before visiting. 🌧

As always, please CALL prior to your visit as we would hate for you to make the drive only to find we have closed for the day. (209) 296-7048. ☎️

Sticking with tradition admission and parking is FREE, but we do accept donations which help pay for bulbs for future plantings. 🌼

You’re welcome to pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic in our designated picnic area. 🧺

As much as we love animals, we DO NOT allow pets on the property. So please find a pet sitter before your trip. 🚫🐶

For those making the trek on two wheels please be aware we only offer gravel/dirt parking for your motorcycle. We suggest skilled riders only. 🏍

Please be respectful to the property and stick to the walking paths! This ensures the flowers will look as good as possible for as long as possible!

Thank you everyone for your patience as we’ve had some crazy weather this year. Hopefully Mother Nature will bless us with some great weather so everyone can enjoy their visit. -DH

Friends of Daffodil Hill,

We are sorry to inform you that due to the unusual weather, Daffodil Hill will not be opening for the 2018 season.

We started the season by planting more than 15,000 bulbs in November. We had some warm weather in February which started the bulbs blooming and thought we would have an early opening.

Since the end of February we have had rain, hail, and snow every week. The early flowers are gone and the ones that are up are badly damaged.

We are posting this notice since more rain and snow are expected this week.

We hope that those who have been waiting to visit will be able to make other plans to enjoy the beauty, shopping, wineries, and great restaurants Amador County has to offer. We look forward to seeing everyone next year.

- The Ryan Family
