How did the Richards-Jackson dinner get its name?

The Richards–Jackson Dinner in Waco, Texas is named after Governor Ann Richards and Mayor Mae Jackson, two of the most influential Democratic women in Texas politics and two figures with deep ties to Waco and Central Texas Democratic organizing.

Ann Richards served as the 45th Governor of Texas (1991–1995) and remains one of the most iconic Democratic leaders in Texas history. She was known for her sharp wit, populist appeal, and fierce advocacy for women, minorities, and working-class Texans.

Mae Jackson was the first Black mayor of Waco, a longtime educator, civic leader, and Democratic organizer. She served on the Waco City Council and became mayor in 2004. Jackson was known for her commitment to community development, education, and expanding civic participation — especially among underrepresented groups. Her leadership made her one of the most respected Democratic figures in McLennan County. She was also one of the founding members of Texas Democratic Women.
