Though Spring will soon turn to Summer, we work throughout all seasons to keep Haralson a place fit for the people and animals of our county. June is an important month environmentally - not only is it the home of World Environmental Day, it'll also give us a chance to spotlight several keystone species in our great state. About a month from now, we've also got a 4th of July event coming up - keep a lookout!

As May flies by, let's talk about mayflies!
Mayflies are important pollinators, yet they're commonly regarded as pests. As you'd see if you go by any creek or river this time of year, mayflies thrive around running water. They're essential pollinators for native aquatic and semiaquatic plants in particular, and also serve as an important food source for birds and fish that spend their lives in and around running water.

May 27th is world otter day! While otters as an animal can feel far away, they're closer to home than you think! The Tallapoosa river has several stable populations of river otters, acting as both an environmental indicator species and important predator in river ecosystems. While otters themselves are resilient to environmental pressure, their food sources are not, and some of the first things to go away as a consequence of habitat loss are larger mammalian predators like the river otter.
