7:00 PM UPDATE:

OEM continues to monitor a classic supercell in Johnson County moving southeast at this time. This storm has a history of producing tornadoes and hail up to 4 inches in diameter. On its current track, this storm will approach the northeastern portions of McLennan County.

At this time, we are not under a tornado watch. We may be added to the watch to our north shortly as this storm continues to dive southeast.

We will continue to monitor and provide updates as needed.

A cold front and dryline are bringing a chance of thunderstorms to Waco and McLennan County today, some of which may be severe.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has us in a Slight (2/5) Risk area.

The main threats with any storm would be large hail (up to 3”), damaging winds (70mph) and an isolated tornado.

Flash flooding is also a concern given high moisture across the area in the strongest, most organized storms.

Storm chances will be highest late this afternoon and evening.

Good news, cooler temperatures and additional rain chances are on the way later this week.

Have multiple ways to receive warnings and brush up on your severe weather plans to keep you and your family safe.

Hot and dry conditions continue today and will help keep storm development suppressed for most of the day, with any isolated activity possible in the late afternoon hours.

Severe weather chances for Waco and McLennan County are low today, 20% or less this afternoon. The SPC has us in a Marginal (1/5) Risk area.

The main threat with any storm would be large hail.

Looking ahead - The more significant severe weather threat this week stays to our north and east through Tuesday, as storms are expected to develop along a frontal boundary and push southeast arriving in our area already weakening.

Good news, cooler temperatures and rain are on the way later this week.

OEM will monitor throughout the day and provide updates if anything changes. If you have any questions or unmet needs, please let us know.

Thanks to an even stronger cap than yesterday, our severe weather threat is very low today, less than 10% locally. The SPC has placed us in a Marginal (1/5) Risk area today.

The main threat with any possible storm would be large hail.

Good morning, McLennan County!

Our area is on the southern edge of today’s severe weather threat. Most areas will stay dry, but any storm that develops could become intense quickly, including very large hail and an isolated tornado risk. This is a classic “low coverage, high impact” setup.

We are in a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for McLennan County.

We expect development to occur between 5 PM – Midnight. Initial storm development (if any) is expected west of the area along and near the dry line late this afternoon.

We will also watch for additional storms that may drift southeast overnight, however, most activity is expected to remain north of the county.

IF a thunderstorm is able to get going, the following hazards are possible:
• Very large hail (greater than 3”)
• Damaging winds
• Isolated tornado risk, with a stronger tornado possible after sunset

Storm development depends on whether the cap erodes and the dryline pushes far enough east, both remain uncertain for McLennan County.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, a similar, but weaker pattern will be in place. Again, we will have a low (~10%) chance of storms, with the main threat remaining north of the area.

Make today, a great Saturday!

Preparedness is built long before a real emergency happens.

Yesterday, we completed a full-scale emergency exercise at Waco Regional Airport, the largest exercise of its kind in our community since 2009.

We tested aircraft emergency response, medical triage and transport, hospital surge capacity with our partners at Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest and Ascension Providence, and patient tracking across the region.

Our exercise also coincided with similar drills at airports in Austin and Killeen.

The conversations afterward, responders talking through what worked and where we can improve, are what make exercises like this worth it. That is how we get better.

We are also grateful to the more than 100 volunteers who gave their time to make this exercise as realistic and valuable as possible.

We are proud to serve this community alongside incredible partners. Thank you to the team at Waco Regional Airport for making this exercise everything it needed to be.

We’re excited for this full-scale emergency exercise at Waco Regional Airport on Wednesday, April 15.

As one of the largest exercises conducted in Waco since 2009, this is a major opportunity to test our plans, evaluate coordination, and strengthen our readiness alongside airport staff, first responders, hospitals, volunteers, and partner agencies.

This is only an exercise. Flights will continue as scheduled with no impact to passengers.
