Harvey Grubbs of the Waco Navigators, pictured in 1914 in Waco’s Katy Park, now home to Magnolia. He had a lifetime 1.000 on-base percentage in the MLB. Learn more about the hardscrabble team that won a league championship, with several players getting a cameo in the majors. Thanks to the WACOAN and Robert Darden for the chance to share photos likely unseen in Waco for a century or more. https://www.wacoan.com/lost-for-100-years/

Come see us on Saturday!

Downtown Church Architecture
with Kenneth Hafertepe
March 28 | 9:00 AM | St. Francis on the Brazos
315 Jefferson Avenue

Join Waco Walks this Saturday to learn more about the history and architecture of some of our most distinctive downtown church buildings. Dr. Ken Hafertepe, professor of Museum Studies at Baylor, and author of “Historic Buildings of Waco, Texas” will lead us on a walk including St. Francis on the Brazos, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, First Baptist Church, and Saint James United Methodist Church (now Second and Clay), and the original site of the Presbyterian Church. Meet up at 9:00 AM on March 28 at St. Francis on the Brazos, 315 Jefferson Avenue. For more information google “Waco Walks” or find Waco Walks on Facebook.

DATE: Saturday, March 28

TIME: 9 a.m.

MEET UP LOCATION: St. Francis on the Brazos, 315 Jefferson Avenue

WALK LENGTH: 2 miles

ORGANIZERS: Ashley Bean Thornton, Jennifer Richie & Kenneth Hafertepe

GOT QUESTIONS?: Please contact Ashley Thornton by email at [email protected]

ACCESSIBILITY: We will be walking through downtown Waco, mostly on city streets and sidewalks. Be prepared for some grassy patches, curbs and broken sidewalks.

HYDRATION: Please bring your own water.

DOGS: Dogs welcome, but they MUST be on a leash, and you MUST scoop the p**p! Dogs will not be allowed inside of buildings.

WEATHER/CANCELLATION PLAN: We plan to walk rain or shine, so if it looks like rain, bring an umbrella. Due to the high amount of grass along the route, if it has rained previously, we recommend wearing shoes to account for this. In the event that there is a terrible storm or something happens and we have to cancel, we will send out a note to the email list.

We’re grateful to have the chance to present a case study on our adaptive reuse project 2nd and Clay at the American Studies Association of Texas Conference hosted at Baylor University. Especially meaningful is the opportunity to participate in this event at my alma mater with people I highly respect.
