How can citizens advocate for an issue? That’s the question we asked students to think about as they continued researching and refining their presentations. To enhance their research skills, students were invited to participate in a media literacy activity that explored the pros and cons of AI, as well as how to identify AI-generated images and articles. Not surprisingly, their ability to distinguish between real and AI-generated content was strong. Thank you to Kelsey Roach from the iEngage Research Team for leading our students in this awesome activity!

What does it mean to advocate? This week, students have been asked to identify, as a group, a local civic issue they want to advocate for and present to their fellow iEngage students. Today, we invited community members to act as “sharks” for a Shark Tank-esque mock presentation, allowing students to strengthen their advocacy skills before Friday’s closing ceremony. The students blew us away with their passion and preparedness, which means we can only imagine how stellar they’ll be on Friday. Can’t wait!

How do citizens investigate community issues? iEngage campers dove into answering this question to help further their understanding of and engagement in civic life. Thanks to the expertise of Dr. Stephanie Boddie and Dr. Mandie Dunphy on our food system, and the W.R. Poage Library's resources on maps and urban renewal in Waco, students honed their investigative skills by examining our local community.

What does it mean to be a good citizen? That’s what we asked students on the first day of iEngage. To help answer this question, we heard from the First Gent, Brad Livingstone, and spoke with community members working to make Waco a better place for all of its citizens. Seeing these young people engaged, asking questions, and expressing their ideas for the future has us fired up and ready to empower these students to see themselves as citizens by thinking about and enacting citizenship in participatory and change-oriented ways. Stay tuned for more updates!

The iEngage Summer Civics Institute is more than just a typical day camp. It’s a unique, free opportunity for rising 5th through 9th-grade students to learn how to make a real difference in their school, neighborhood, and community. The camp stands out with its action civics inquiry model, which fosters participants’ understanding of and engagement in civic life. Students interact with local civic leaders and elected officials, play iCivics games, examine primary source materials at the Poage legislative library, collaborate with like-minded peers, and engage in a community issues advocacy project.
The camp……
Develops young people’s civic and political competence.
Develops young people’s leadership and speaking skills.
Strengthens their community and political engagement through inquiry-based civics projects on community issues.
Teaches the structure of government and what it means to be an active, engaged citizen in their community.
Illustrate how they can work to make a change even as young people.

Today, as we honor those who've served in our armed forces, we remember local hero, veteran, and activist Manuel "Manny" Sustaita. After a career in the military, Manny dedicated his life to ensuring that veterans in the Waco community received the recognition he felt they deserved.
