Burn ban lifted for Cumberland County

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

WCFD is deeply saddened to announce the loss of one of our own. Mr. Linwood Hill faithfully served our department for 54 years in many capacities. More than his service, he was the true patriarch of our department—guiding, supporting, and inspiring us all. His presence will be profoundly missed, but his legacy will live on in the heart of WCFD.

Rest easy Chief Harris. We will be praying for the Harris and Cotton family in the days to come.

It is with profound sadness and grief that we announce the passing of our Fire Chief Owen Harris. Chief Harris was the definition of a public servant and leader. He served the citizens of Cumberland County for nearly 70 years with 42 of those as the Fire Chief. The only thing he loved more than the fire service was his family. Even though he spoke softly, he served as an example and mentor to all he encountered, garnering the respect of all that met him. The only consolation is knowing that he is back with his beloved "Cooie".

Rest Easy Chief, even though we don't want to we will take it from here.
