Our Story
Judge Julie Schafer has served on the Ninth District Court of Appeals, covering Lorain, Medina, Summit and Wayne Counties, since February 2015. She has heard over 1,000 cases and been the author judge for over 400 opinions. The Court of Appeals hears matters from all of the trial courts in the District, including Criminal, Civil, Traffic, Domestic, Probate and Juvenile and administrative appeals as well. Judge Schafer has experienced the ultimate privilege of sitting as a visiting judge on the Ohio Supreme Court in 2019, as well as visiting on the 6th and 5th District Courts of Appeal.
Judge Schafer has over 18 years of relevant legal experience, including being elected to serve as an Akron Municipal Court judge in 2014 and serving the communities in private practice, focusing on Domestic, Juvenile and Probate law for twelve years. Her daily experiences practicing law brings a sound foundation to the bench. With the recent effects of COVID-19, the Supreme Court has tolled the filing deadlines which will result in a glut of cases and trials suddenly being heard on all of the courts’ calendars this summer. This will likely result in a large number of appeals being filed in the third and fourth quarters of 2020. The anticipated hectic pace of timely hearing these appeals will be most effectively managed with Judge Schafer’s continued presence on the Court. In these uncertain times, assuring a smooth, uninterrupted process would best benefit the citizens of the district.
Judge Schafer’s further commitment to our communities is demonstrated by her service as a Foster Parent for Summit County, caring for over 30 children and adopting 3 young children. She has an adult bio daughter, Attorney Morgan McKee, who practices law in Wheeling, WV with Bailey & Wyant, LPA. Judge Schafer served as a Board Member for Copley-Fairlawn City Schools for fourteen years, having been elected 4 times. She was elected Trustee to the Ohio School Boards Association and served as President of the Northeast Region which covered 22 counties in northeastern Ohio. Judge Schafer was the student advisor for the CSI Club at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School for three years.
Judge Schafer earned her law degree and MBA from the University of Akron, her Bachelor’s degree from Hiram College - Summa cm laude. She is a proud Bee - graduating from Medina High School in 1975.
