🚨 WAELDER — IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨

First and foremost, THANK YOU to the citizens of Waelder. The support y’all have shown me and the Waelder Volunteer Fire Department has meant more than words can express. Serving as your Fire Chief has been one of the greatest honors of my life.

After much thought, I have made the decision to step down as Fire Chief to focus more on my law enforcement career. This was not an easy decision, but it is the right one for me and my future.

👉 I will continue to maintain open communication with our new Fire Chief, Steven Barrera. He is not a stranger coming in—he is a familiar face, having served as my Assistant Chief. I will continue to support him and the department in any way needed.

🔥 NEW FIRE CHIEF ANNOUNCED 🔥
Please join me in congratulating Steven Barrera as he steps into the role of Fire Chief. He has worked his way up through the ranks and has proven his dedication time and time again.

I have full confidence that Chief Barrera will lead this department with strength, integrity, and pride — and continue to serve the citizens of Waelder at the highest level.

💬 Waelder, we are still here. We are still serving. And the department is in great hands.

Thank you again for the trust, the support, and for always standing behind us. 🚒🔥

🚨 Incident Response – Interstate 10 Westbound 🚨

Today at approximately 2:22 PM, the Waelder Volunteer Fire Department and Gonzales County ESD #1 EMS/Rescue were paged out to Interstate 10 westbound near mile marker 653 for the report of a two-vehicle accident.

While units were en route, Texas Highway Patrol Troopers arrived on location and advised that a SUV pulling a camper was fully engulfed in flames.

While responding, Fire Chief Bobby White requested additional mutual aid manpower from the Flatonia Fire Department. Chief Grauke with the Ottine Volunteer Fire Department overheard the radio traffic and notified Chief White that his station was staffed and that he also had a unit nearby. Chief White advised Ottine Fire Department to go ahead and send the unit to assist.

Chief White arrived on scene and began making an initial fire attack on the vehicles. While approaching the interstate, traffic was backed up for several miles, which would have delayed incoming apparatus. Due to the fire conditions, Chief White requested a water tender from the Gonzales Fire Department.

Shortly after, Chief Grauke, Tender 95, and Attack 94 from the Waelder Volunteer Fire Department arrived on scene and began assisting with suppression efforts. The Flatonia Fire Department also arrived with a tender, engine, and additional manpower, allowing crews to quickly gain control of the fire. Once adequate resources were on scene, Gonzales Fire Department was advised they could cancel their response.

Additional assistance on scene included Flatonia Volunteer Fire Department, Ottine Volunteer Fire Department, and Gonzales County Rescue 3.

Teamwork like this leads to the best possible outcome for everyone involved. Unfortunately, the number of volunteers serving our communities continues to decline each year. Incidents like this highlight how critical mutual aid and volunteer firefighters are to rural communities.

The Waelder Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank all agencies and personnel who assisted on this call.

All occupant suffered minor injuries.

We would also like to encourage everyone to consider volunteering with your local fire department. Stop and ask yourself one important question:

If you call 911… who will show up?

🔥 Attention Waelder & Gonzales County Residents 🔥

This is a reminder that the Burn Ban is currently in effect for Gonzales County. No outdoor burning of any kind is permitted at this time.

There are a few previously approved burn permits that were issued by the Gonzales County Fire Marshal; however, we have been advised that no additional permits will be issued at this time under the current burn ban conditions.

Please help us reduce the risk of wildfires by following all burn ban guidelines and avoiding any activities that could ignite a fire. Conditions remain dry, and even a small flame can spread rapidly.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated and helps keep our community safe.

Thank you,
Fire Chief Bobby White

‼️ A Message from Fire Chief Bobby White ‼️

I would like to personally thank our local TXDOT team, along with everyone they brought in to assist, for their hard work and dedication during this weekend’s winter ice storm. Their continuous efforts treating and monitoring the roads played a major role in keeping our community safe.

I’m proud to announce that your first responders only had to respond to ONE accident all weekend—and thankfully, it was minor. Given the conditions, it could have been much worse, but due to TXDOT’s preparation and quick action, the roads remained as safe as possible.

I would also like to recognize and thank my staff, who stayed on call and at the station throughout the weekend to remain ready in the event that you needed us. I have to say, I have a great team, and I couldn’t do what I do without them. Their dedication and readiness do not go unnoticed.

To TXDOT and to my team: Thank you for your commitment, professionalism, and service to our community.
