In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, SSG Belle recited sections of the famous “I Have a Dream” speech. King Jr. originally delivered this speech on Aug. 28, 1963.
There’s a beautiful connection to Hawaii that many might not know about: on Sept. 17, 1959 MLK made a historic visit to Honolulu and addressed the first session of the Hawaiʻi State House of Representatives. He stated, “As I think of the struggle that we are engaged in the South land, we look to you Hawaiʻi for inspiration and as a noble example, where you have already accomplished in the area of racial harmony and racial justice, what we are struggling to accomplish in other sections of the country.” Martin Luther King Jr. thanked Hawaii for its example of racial harmony and justice.
Also in the coming years at the March from Selma to Montgomery in March 1965, King Jr. and other civil rights leaders were gifted leis directly from the Hawaiian islands. They wore them as a symbol of aloha, love, compassion, mercy, peace, kindness and gratitude.
