Hall of Fame Spotlight: John Wall (Teacher 1976-2004)

We are honored to induct John Wall into the 2026 Wahpeton Public School Hall of Fame.

John was born in Enderlin, North Dakota, and graduated from Lisbon High School, where he was active in 4-H, FFA, amateur baseball, and wrestling. He attended Valley City State College, earning a bachelor’s degree with a double major in English and History in 1970. He later earned a master’s degree in English from North Dakota State University in 1976.

John devoted 34 years to the field of education, beginning his career teaching English and journalism at Sargent Central High School before dedicating the next 30 years to the students of Wahpeton High School. He was recognized twice as WHS Teacher of the Year and received numerous awards for excellence in education and journalism. Following his retirement in 2004, John served 10 years in the North Dakota House of Representatives, including work on the Agriculture and Education Committees. He was also the founding president of the Bagg Bonanza Farm restoration project and spent two years traveling North Dakota sharing the state’s literary heritage through the ND Humanities Council Speaker’s Bureau. His work advocating for student journalists led to the passage of the John Wall New Voices Act in 2015, protecting student journalists from administrative censorship.

North Dakota graduates who completed 1+ qualifying dual-credit courses and are enrolled at a North Dakota college may be eligible for a one-time scholarship of $250–$750—check your eligibility and apply!

This scholarship rewards college students for taking dual-credit coursework as a high school student. To qualify, students must meet the eligibility criteria, complete an application with the ND University System (NDUS), and provide all supporting documentation.

Hall of Fame Spotlight: Tami Klosterman Sirek (Class of 1986 & Teacher 1997-2001)

We are honored to induct Tami Klosterman Sirek into the 2026 Wahpeton Public School Hall of Fame.

Tami graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1986, where she was involved in Wopanin, Wa-Hi, Wopettes, and served as a wrestling cheerleader. She continued her education at Moorhead State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education.

Tami has dedicated her career to art, education, entrepreneurship, and community service. She taught art at Wahpeton Middle School and currently teaches art at Campbell-Tintah. As co-owner of Gallery on the Go, she pioneered the program in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Missouri, bringing art experiences to people of all ages. She has also led Artist in Residence programs, served as a BIO Girls Director, mentored through Kinship, and pioneered the Festival of Trees in the Wahpeton area. In 2021, she was honored with the “Spark Plug” Award from the Wahpeton/Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce.

Hall of Fame Spotlight: Keath Borchert (Class of 1966)

We are honored to induct Keath Borchert into the 2026 Wahpeton Public School Hall of Fame.

Keath graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1966, where he was active in student leadership, Thespians, Key Club, choir, and athletics, participating in football, wrestling, and track. He was also congressionally nominated to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. Keath continued his education at NDSCS, earning AA and AS degrees, and at UND, earning BA and BS degrees. He later earned his master’s degree from NDSU in 1977.

Keath has dedicated his career and life to education, agriculture, and community service. He served as Director of Admissions at NDSCS for 31 years and has been a lifelong farm and ranch hand. He was a founding member of the Wahpeton Public School Alumni Foundation and has served in numerous community leadership roles, including the Wahpeton Dollars for Scholars, Dakota Valley Electric, Twin Town Artist Series, North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame, and more. He was also named Wahpeton High School Booster of the Year and recognized as a top college admissions professional in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota.

Hall of Fame Spotlight: Vernon Hektner (Class of 1939)

We are honored to induct Vernon Hektner into the 2026 Wahpeton Public School Hall of Fame.

Vernon graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1939. He was part of the first class of students from Mooreton to be bused to Wahpeton Central School, beginning a lifelong connection to education and the Wahpeton community. He attended NDSCS from 1939–1941 before graduating from Concordia College in 1943. In 1945, he earned a master’s degree in history from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Vernon dedicated his career to education, spending nearly four decades at what is now NDSCS. He began teaching history in 1946 and then served as Dean of the Arts and Science Division from 1956–1982 before returning to the classroom from 1982–1984. Beyond education, Vernon served 10 years on the Wahpeton School Board, during which time the current high school was built. He was also deeply involved in Kiwanis and numerous community organizations and boards. His contributions to education and the community were recognized through numerous honors, including the Kiwanis Tablet of Honor and the naming of the Hektner Student Center at NDSCS in his honor in 2016.

Hall of Fame Spotlight: Roy Hausauer (Class of 1938)

We are honored to induct Roy Hausauer into the 2026 Wahpeton Public School Hall of Fame.

Roy graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1938, where he excelled in football and basketball and was involved in band, Wopanin, Wa-Hi Headline, track, Quill and Scroll, Letterman’s Club, and student leadership. As co-captain of the 1938 football team, he scored the winning touchdown in the High School City Championship game and was named to the All-State Class A football team. He continued his education at the University of North Dakota, graduating in 1942 with a degree in education.

Roy dedicated his life to education, athletics, military service, business, and public service. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict, coached Wahpeton High School to the 1947 North Dakota State Football Championship, and later served as an assistant coach at UND and the North Dakota State School of Science. He owned Hausauer Beverages and the Valley Motel and served 27 years in the North Dakota House of Representatives, including Speaker of the House. Among his many honors, he was named Legislator of the Year by President Ronald Reagan in 1983.
