When you shop at any of our Maui Friends of the Library bookstores, you not only help support our public libraries in Maui County but also help fund scholarships for Maui students.

Our all-volunteer nonprofit organization awards scholarships to Maui County residents who are seeking a Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) at the University Hawai‘i.

We’re pleased to share that we’re now able to offer $3,000 per semester for those living in Maui County. Many classes are available online and here at University of Hawai'i Maui College.

Scholarship funds can be used for tuition, textbooks and transportation to UH Manoa for onsite classes.

We’ve been awarding scholarships since 2009. Twenty-seven men and women have benefited
and 12 of our recipients are currently serving in library positions here in Maui County!

Interested in pursuing this educational and career path? Learn more on our website under What We Do/Academic Scholarships. Prospective recipients need to first enroll in classes, then fill out our online application.

Congratulations to Kerri, soon to be our newest graduate. We appreciate the kind words and are glad this support made a difference. We’re looking forward to seeing her soon in one of our libraries!

600 pounds of books will be delivered personally this Wednesday, August 14 from Madison Ellner and her family when they arrive on Maui for their annual vacation.

Madison, 9 years old and in fourth grade, visited last year at this time when the fire had devastated historic Lāhainā. She wanted to give something to Maui to help. When she returned home to California, she began collecting books in her community.

The books will be sold at the Maui Friends of the Library Bookstore in Kīhei and all proceeds donated to the Maui's public libraries.

The family, vacationing on Maui for 39 years, will bring the books to the store at 10 a.m. “We hope the public will join us for a reception to thank our young donor for this remarkable donation,” said Annie Wilson, store manager. The store is located in the South Maui Center at 95 E. Līpoa Street in Kīhei, open daily from 10a.m. to 6p.m.

About four years ago during the pandemic lockdown, Maui resident Kimberly Thayer had the idea to start a take-a-slipper, leave-a-slipper lending library. The Conversation caught up with Thayer to hear about what she's learned.
