Maui Council Chair Mike White's Statement on Property Tax Reassessments is Patently False

The Maui County Council released a press release on August 11, 2016 and wrongly claimed that the attorneys representing the timeshare associations that were subjected to retroactive taxation by the County of Maui, resulting in approximately $10 million in new taxes, requested or invited the illegal amended assessments.

This statement is patently false and a parroting of an erroneous conclusion reached by the Deputy Corporation Counsel representing the County of Maui and Maui County Council. It should be immediately retracted.

Mike White needs to retract his statement and apologize to Maui voters, and those specific property owners, for misrepresenting the facts immediately.

The Maui County Council's practice of smearing property owners who are asking for tax relief in the media is reprehensible. Furthermore, the Maui County Council must stop singling out property owners for punitive tax treatment.

One Ohana PAC will continue to alert taxpayers and property owners to the abuses of Maui County officials until there is tax equity for everyone. It's clear the Council has little regard for property owners. Every property owner in Maui County is at risk.

The Maui County Council has begun retroactive tax assessments on property owners, in some cases, going back as far as 10 years!

So far they’ve billed homeowners, over $10 million. Making matters even worse, these tax bills must be paid within 30 days or taxpayers face huge penalties! This move by the Council to hit property owners will effect not only homeowners, but condo owners, and renters. No one is exempt from this new tax.

Do you think this new tax policy and the millions of dollars in new taxes levied on all citizens is a wise move?

Wow! Have you seen how the Maui County Council slammed homeowners and business again? Another property tax hit! Lower taxes, but a higher assessment. That's just not right. Everyone on Maui deserves better -- everyone.
