Weigh in on West Maui’s future with the Planning Department’s online Vision Workshop through Dec. 31, 2018, at www.wearemaui.org.

Organized by the county Department of Planning’s Long-Range Division, an in-person Vision Workshop was held Dec. 5 at West Maui Senior Center. More than 80 residents offered insight, hopes and dreams for the area over the next two decades. The input helps county planners craft a vision for the West Maui Community Plan.

“Workshops like this one are a great opportunity for the public to weigh in on their community’s future,” Division Chief Pam Eaton said. “We were excited by the turnout and are looking forward to turning these ideas into a strong vision the community can really get behind.”

The vision is a critical part of any community plan, according to the department. It tells the story of what a community will look like when the goals, policies and action items in a plan are implemented. It’s a target for the community and elected officials to work toward, and also a way to check whether the plan is working.

In January 2019, the department will gather all input from the in-person and online workshops and create draft vision, which will be posted on the We Are Maui website and distributed via email and social media. The public will then have the opportunity to provide comments on the draft vision options through website. The vision statement will be used to guide community design workshops in February 2019.

Welcome We are West Maui represents an exciting effort to update the West Maui Community Plan. The Maui County Planning Department looks forward to working with you to shape the future of West Maui. This new website connects you to the update process. You can: Communicate your priorities through onl...

Being a chess enthusiast, I was extremely moved by the thoughtful gesture of my staff surprising me with an enlarged chess piece and appreciation message imprinted on it. They said that the pawn piece represents them, the individuals to whom job opportunities were provided and whom I mentored and worked closely with over the years.

Thank you to the "A-Team" for this gift, and thank you for your hard work in our very first term from 2003 to 2007, and over the past 8 years. It’s been a real pleasure to work with you.
